Friday 24 April 2026 Form 6 Environmental Studies - Litter Pick On Tuesday morning Mr and Mrs Rawson took F6 Environmental Studies class on a litter pick around the rugby grounds. We have been looking at the effects of plastic pollution so it was interesting for them to see how much plastic we collected and understand what a difference we were making just in a short time.

Friday 27 March 2026 Oklahoma - Forms 7 and 8 Show Two evening performances of Oklahoma that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday . The final performance in particular was a triumph, and our Form 8 pupils supported the up-and-coming talent by playing their parts with as much courage as this shyer year-group could muster. The talented actors in our top year graciously stepped aside to allow Form 7 to grab the spotlight, whilst supporting them in their endeavours. Mairi-Suzanne, Caleb, Heidi, Sholto, Tilly, Henry, Erin, Harry and the supporting cast provided their audiences with quality entertainment and a level of real anticipation for next year's stage show.

A mixture of history, comedy and intrigue held audiences spellbound as the pupils led us through their tale to find the spy. Congratulations to all of our performers.

Tuesday 27 January 2026 Form 7 Space Camp Ten intrepid Form 7 pupils headed down to York on a rather wet and windy Friday afternoon to join Mike Shaw at Bootham School for a Space camp. We were welcomed by Sophie Morrison, our host in the boarding house and settled into our rooms before heading off to the lab for our first workshop on the formation and features of the moon. After learning about the different types of craters, wrinkles, rilles and maria, we used different materials and sizes of marbles to try and recreate some of the features ourselves. It was amazing how, with a bit of creativity and a few simple materials, we were able to produce very similar structures to those about which we had just been learning.

Sophie came 4th ( in the adult category) in her first tetrathlon, Tilly L ran in the Scottish cross country relays in Cumbernauld and her team were placed 3rd. Mr Harvey and Mrs Simpson ran the Dublin Marathon raising a huge sum of money for @brain_tumour_research . We are so proud of them all.👏👏

They mixed cake for the cow's breakfast, watched the farrier getting the ponies ready for the Ride Out, counted hens & eggs, fed Titus the Tortoise and had a picnic! Thank you so much to Mr and Mrs Lee for such a fun and interesting day, we all learnt so much about where our food comes from!

Thursday 22 May 2025 Form 4 attend the Border Union Schools Countryside Day 2025 On Tuesday 20th May, Form 4 attended the Border Union Schools Countryside Day in Kelso where the aim of the day was for children to experience as many aspects of rural life as possible. The day included rural skills, past, present and future. There were around 50 exhibitors attending the event to give the children the opportunity to learn about many rural businesses and skills, with a number of organisations allowing the children to take part in hands on activities such as planting seeds, milking a cow and making butter. The children saw examples of crops that are grown locally and the products that they are used to create. A fantastic educational day out!

Tuesday 22 April 2025 Gardening Club Mrs Stuart and Miss Burn alongside Mr Key, Madame Bruce and Miss Renwick were joined by lots of pupils for the first gardening club of the year at lunchtime today. Proving that many hands do indeed make light work, four of the raised beds are almost cleared and ready to be planted with fruits, salads and cut flowers for the school.

Tuesday 25 March 2025 Middle School Maths Challenge The middle school, Forms 3, 4 and 5, took part in a maths challenge on Monday. Eight teams, made up of 6 pupils per team, solved a number of maths puzzles, before completing an individual 10 question mental maths paper in 10 minutes. Points were awarded for correct answers and teamwork. The winning team were Evie, Nellie, Alex, Sacha, Andrew and Hesper. Quote of the day which was music to my ears, ‘Maths is fun’.

Monday 17 February 2025 Melrose Rotary Club - congratulations to our artists We were delighted to be asked to produce some Christmas art work with the theme "Jingle bells, Santa is on his way" The middle school enjoyed rising to the challenge producing some lovely work. Just before mid-term we heard that Isla and Chloe were winners with Georgia and Armel being runners up. Mr Harvey took the opportunity of Monday's assembly to congratulate our young artists. It really was most generous of Melrose Rotary Club to organise such a nice competition and award super prizes that will be eagerly used by our little artists.

We have experimented with both ice and chocolate and are investigating the different melting points of solids. We used the school’s digital thermometer to take our temperatures and then thought we had better check that chocolate would melt at this temperature!

Friday 27 September 2024 Child Smile visit Form 3 This morning Hayley and Becky from Child Smile, the Oral Health Department, visited Form 3 and talked to the pupils about ‘Looking after your teeth’. Form 3 had the opportunity to use the plaque disclosing tablets which show up plaque. The children could see the areas that needed extra care and attention when toothbrushing; this will help them to improve and perfect their toothbrushing technique.

Monday 23 September 2024 Bang Goes The Borders - Saturday 21st September 2024 Initially the brain child of former parent Dr Sara Shinton, the festival has run since 2011 and consistently welcomes over 750 children and young people from across the Borders region and beyond. It is generously supported by the passionate and highly inspiring scientists and presenters from universities, schools and educational organisations across the UK, who volunteer their time to engage with our enthusiastic and appreciative participants, and educate them in numerous aspects of modern science. On Saturday, we welcomed over 1,800 visitors!

Coffee, tea and home baking will be served in the French-themed dining room by the Form 7 French class, and some French songs will be sung! All visitors are welcome to come and rest their legs and try some of the goodies on offer. This year, our chosen charity is The Brain Tumour Charity.

Monday 20 May 2024 Friday Night Disco 59 pupils attended our school disco in the Morrison Hall on Friday night. Excitement peaked when children realised we had hired a proper DJ for the evening and they would not be subjected to Miss Burn and Mr Rooney’s playlist choices! The evening was filled with laughter and fun as the children enjoyed playing Spike Ball and Swing Ball in the sun when they needed a break from the dancing.

Friday 17 May 2024 Kindergarten Pedal Push 2024 Yesterday, the St Mary’s Kindergarten Annual Charity Pedal Push took place today on the school tennis courts, between 11.00 am and 12 noon. This year, Kindergarten are raising funds to create a new outdoor learning space.

Monday 6 May 2024 UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Challenge On the 25th April all pupils in Forms 7 and 8, as well as several of our younger pupils, sat the UKMT Junior Challenge. This annual event for Year 8 and younger pupils is designed to promote mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic techniques to solve “interesting” problems. It is also very useful practice in the run-up to Common Entrance later this term. In total, I’m pleased to report that we earned 11 certificates of achievement this year.

Monday 4 March 2024 Former Pupil Dinner A most enjoyable Former Pupil Dinner was held at the Buccleuch Arms Hotel on Friday night. This year we were honoured to welcome Carl Hogg FP as our Guest Speaker. Carl is currently the Director of Academy and Development for Gloucester Rugby, following an illustrious career of coaching, playing Professional Rugby and representing Scotland. However the majority of his rugby was played here in Melrose alongside his great friend, Doddie Weir. This year at Melrose Sevens, he will be inducted into the Melrose RFC Hall of Fame.

When we weren’t running, St. Mary’s pupils could be seen and heard around the course cheering on their peers, holding kit and sharing words of heartfelt encouragement.

Thursday 22 February 2024 Boarders Got Talent Last night, 27 pupils piled into the Morrison Hall alongside the boarding team for the annual ‘Boarders Got Talent’ competition. Gap Student Russell was our entertaining host for the evening while Rebecca was our official event photographer. All 11 acts were brilliant and made the judging process very tough for the panel of Mr Outram, Miss Pugh and Miss Burn. In the end, Maisie took a well-deserved third place for her piano performance, Rose’s incredible horse jumping show earned her second place and Maddie took home the gold for her amazing dance routine which almost had the audience under a trance! Special mentions were awarded to Gabriella and Thomas for their standout performances within their groups. Well done to all competitors on a brilliant evening!

Instead of a tractor, 2 Clydesdale horse called Dave and Dick pulled the seed harrow to disturb the ground ready for planting.

Friday 8 December 2023 Form 5 Marble Jar Form 5 have worked hard all term, which has resulted from time to time in being given marbles which have been collecting in a jar. Having filled the jar, they have been rewarded today with a home clothes day and a delicious treat of French Toast from the kitchen. They then set up the Form 5 Marble Café, where they treated the staff who have looked after them this term to fresh coffee and fancy biscuits. Well done on a super term!

Friday 1 December 2023 Santa's Grotto and Winter Wonderland Our wonderful Friends of St. Mary's have arranged a fun filled day for our pupils. There is a Santa's Grotto for our younger members of the community, Kindergarten, Reception class, Forms 1 and 2. In the Morrison Hall there are festive stalls and prizes, marshmallow roasting, a hot chocolate cafe and later on today, the lighting of the Christmas Tree and Carol Singing will take place.

Pre-Prep children walked around the campus, also raising money for CHAS. £332.84 was raised on the day to add to Mrs Kirkness justgiving fundraiser.

Monday 25 September 2023 Reception Class learn about Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Mrs Hayley Pinches came in this afternoon to read The Moon Festival by Jillian Lim. The book tells the story of a Chinese family as they celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Megan read each page of the story in English, then Hayley read in Chinese. The children enjoyed listening to the story and asked lots of interesting questions.

Friday 19 May 2023 UK MATHEMATICS TRUST On the 26th April all pupils in Forms 7 and 8 attempted the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Challenge. This annual event for Year 8 and younger pupils is designed to promote mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic techniques to solve “interesting” problems.

Wednesday 3 May 2023 Form 7 Environmental Trip to Faldonside Form 7 had a wonderful visit to Dr Karen Blackport’s estate at Faldonside on Tuesday morning, as part of their focus on biodiversity and habitat restoration in environmental science. Dr. Blackport is a passionate environmentalist, a keen educator and a true steward of her beautiful land beside the Tweed just north of Galashiels. In the last 18 months, in addition to the wonderful array of trees and habitats already present, the grounds have been enhanced with a pond, hibernaculae, bird and bat boxes, a permaculture garden, hedge planting and a planned program of eradication of invasive species.

Monday 1 May 2023 No Mow May 2023 St Mary’s will be promoting No Mow May again this year, after the success of our own No Mow areas. We already have lots of wild garlic, celandine, dandelions and daisies coming up through the grass, providing early nectar for pollinators. There is more bird activity too, with small songbirds coming in closer to the classrooms due to increased food in the form of insects, as well as ground cover. Friday 9 December 2022 Christmas Cards - Fundraising for Ukraine After a very busy couple of weeks the elf artists now have 100 packs of Christmas cards ready for sale. Every child in St. Mary’s has been drawing, painting and collaging to produce handcrafted cards with the Christmas season in Ukraine very much in our thoughts. Each pack contains 6 unique cards for £10 which will be available at all the forthcoming St. Mary’s Christmas events. You can also pick up a pack at the school office or ask your child to bring one home. We would love to sell as many as possible to send the proceeds to Ukraine in the New Year.

Monday 31 October 2022 Lunchtime Gardening Club Lunchtime gardening club planting the winter vegetables. Beets, broad beans, and red onion sets all went in today, along with 2 rhubarb crowns. Next week we plan to start off some seeds in the greenhouse, with an experimental winter salad patch.

Tuesday 27 September 2022 European Day of Languages Forms 1, 2 and 3 yesterday celebrated European Day of Languages. Following on from assembly and the whole school collectively learning to say 1 to 5 in Ukrainian, they played corners. There were 4 corners ( France, Spain, Germany, Ukraine) and whichever one the pupils chose to run to, they had to say the numbers 1 to 5 in that language!

Monday 12 September 2022 NSEA (National School's Equestrian Association), Alnwick Ford St. Mary’s were represented at the NSEA (National School’s Equestrian Association) at the weekend which was held at Alnwick Ford. The NSEA offers Show Jumping competitions for teams and individuals throughout the country from all schools. A team consisting of Mary T, Georgina and Lottie entered for both the Show jumping and Jumping With Style competition over 2 days whereby they competed as a team and individually.

Friday 1 July 2022 Form 4 visit Priorwood Gardens Form 4 enjoyed a wonderful visit to Priorswood Gardens today. We collected leaves flowers to make prints of on a card which will become the start of a scrapbook we use when we visit there. We also had a very messy time making a marble effect cover using lots of shaving foam and food colouring. We had a brilliant explore and game of tig in the gardens too. Many thanks to Jo and Mr Millar for helping us.

Thursday 30 June 2022 Form 3 visit Priorwood Gardens On Wednesday Form 3 went to Priors Wood Gardens for an arts and craft morning. We walked around the garden collecting items to paint and print a scrap book front cover. We also made marbling pictures with shaving foam and food colouring. It was great fun. We can’t wait to try them and Cheffy and team were all delighted to have some fresh, home-grown ingredients. Tuesday 21 June 2022 Kith n Kin French Café Many thanks, or Merci Beaucoup to all those who dropped in for a hot drink and some home-baked “gateaux” at our French café a week past Friday. It was a hub of activity and the Form 7s loved serving their grandparents and other relations. I hope you agree they were all in fine voice with their French singing, too!

Thursday 2 June 2022 Jubilee Mini Garden Our Form 5 class (P6 equivalent) have really enjoyed upcycling our vegetable crate planter that was, until last week, empty of plants and brown in colour. The idea was to redesign it as the Queen’s crown, white on the bottom, purple on the top with a gold finish. The flowers are the jewels!

Monday 23 May 2022 Environmental Science with Form 7 As part of their environmental science studies, Form 7 are learning how to identify plants and invertebrates in order to carry out a biodiversity survey of the school grounds. We want to see if the No Mow areas have had a positive impact on the biodiversity of the grounds. We will then plan for future projects as we further develop our wildlife areas, with a view to being net positive for biodiversity by 2025.

Thursday 21 April 2022 Forms 3 and 4 visit Trimontium On Thursday Form 3 and 4 visited the event to mark the official opening of the Trimontium Museum at Abbey House. There were lots of fun activities for the children to get involved with, from a treasure hunt around the garden with a lolly for a prize, to trying on lots of Roman equipment and learning more about life for the Roman legionaries who were on hand to practice their battle moves.

Monday 14 March 2022 Eco Committee The eco-committee are grateful to Mr Brydon for putting up a super fence to mark out the ‘no mow, no toe’ zone! It is a test patch to see if we can increase the biodiversity of the area by not mowing or stepping on new growth but also with some planting. Three aconites are poking through the soil beneath the horse chestnuts and hopefully some of the other bulbs we planted in the autumn will start to make an appearance as the ground warms up. Thursday 10 March 2022 Uppingham Visit On Monday Form 7 where lucky enough to benefit from the expertise of Mr David Kirk; history of art teacher at Uppingham School. He brought William Hogarth’s “The Rake’s Progress” to life for us as we worked our way through the 8 etchings that comprise the series. Mr Kirk encouraged us to use our powers of observation to understand the narrative described in the etchings.

Thursday 24 February 2022 Fettes Art Workshop On Thursday Fergus, Hector, Harris, India, Rosa, Martha, Sophie and Esmee were lucky enough to set out on an art adventure to Edinburgh. We weren’t to be daunted by the inconvenience of snow and treacherous roads as we changed plans and boarded the train at Tweedbank. Our hosts for the day, Fettes, had taxis waiting for us at Waverley Station ready to speed us to a wonderfully creative set of workshops. After a most welcome cake which was, of course decorated, with a delicious palette we were excited to don our aprons and begin.

Friday 4 February 2022 Form 2 French clothing exchange project This term, Form 2 are enjoying exchanging pieces of artwork, ideas and songs in French and English with pupils of the same age in an Ecole Primaire in the north of Paris as part of the “Tell Me” clothes exchange project in conjunction with Heriot Watt University in Galashiels.

Friday 4 February 2022 Kindergarten pupils learn about 'Time' The children in Upper Kindergarten are showing interest in ‘Time’. We have been busy talking about what we do at different times of the day, making watches, looking at clocks in our environment and using our sand timer to time different activities in our day.
