About Us
BEng (Hons), PGCE House Parent, English, Latin, D.T. Assistant Form 7 Tutor
I was born in Edinburgh and lived in Fettes College where my mother was housemistress of College East and West. We moved to Highland Perthshire where I was a boarder at Croftinloan Prep School and then Gordonstoun School in Moray. I loved sport and rugby in particular. After leaving school I studied Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University. After graduation I cycled from Sweden to Morocco for a wager and, with £5 note in hand, returned to Edinburgh to work as a headhunter in the oil & gas and finance industries. On the weekends I played in the back row at Stewarts Melville FP RFC.

I thoroughly enjoyed my school days and teaching was always something that I wanted to do. When an opportunity arose at Belhaven Hill, where Mrs Rawson had been teaching for 3 years, I took it with both hands. I completed my PGCE and taught a range of subjects over the 6 ½ years I was there.

We were delighted to be joined by our three sons Fergus, Hector and Lochie.

With prep school teaching running through my family, and my father and uncle St. Mary’s former pupils, it was perhaps inevitable that Mrs Rawson and I and our three wee boys would find our way to St. Mary’s.

Boarding is a wonderful experience and prep school is a great introduction to this fun and fulfilling opportunity. The flexi-boarding model at St. Mary’s allows children to build their confidence and independence from an early age in a warm and friendly home-from-home environment.

I love the classroom environment and have a real passion for the subjects that I teach. Who would not like to spend their days telling and reading stories in English, learning about the Romans in Latin or building machines and models in Design & Technology? I thoroughly enjoy it and feel very lucky to be able to do it every day.

I also love the holistic nature of prep school life where education continues outwith the classroom: in the Boarding House, on the games field or in the countryside around. I have been lucky enough to coach some highly successful teams and win a number of awards including the RSPB’s Nature of Scotland Award for Youth & Education, the Woodland Trust’s Gold Award and a Scottish Rural Award for Wildlife Conservation.

I am really keen to build on and contribute to the growing popularity of boarding at St. Mary’s as well as the school’s excellent sporting achievements and environmental and conservation work.

St. Mary’s is a really special place and Mrs Rawson and I are proud and delighted to be part of it.
