Employment Opportunities

Situated in the heart of the beautiful Scottish Borders, yet only 30 miles from Edinburgh, St. Mary's offers a unique opportunity for teachers of all levels and experience.

We pride ourselves in ensuring that all our teaching staff are well supported both in terms of CPD and in their day to day teaching. New staff members are made to feel welcome and part of the team via an effective mentor programme. Regular staff meetings and INSET workshops ensure a healthy team spirit, and our staff ethos is very much of a family nature.

SCIS (Scottish Council of Independent Schools), offers outstanding support and guidance for teachers in Scotland through regular courses and mailings.

St. Mary's has a strong reputation for being a happy school where teachers and children alike are valued and respected. Please note: All staff are expected to play a full part in the life of St. Mary's. To that end, willingness to help with games (rugby, hockey, cricket, rounders, netball) would certainly be appreciated.

We currently have one vacancy at St. Mary's.

Head of Modern Languages
St. Mary’s Prep School is one of Scotland’s leading independent prep schools, with a roll rising to 200 pupils ranging from 2 – 13 years.  The school sits in the centre of the picturesque Border town of Melrose, next to the River Tweed and at the foot of the Eildon Hills.

Established in 1895, the school is committed to the pursuit of excellence through an exciting and stimulating curriculum that prepares pupils for lifelong journeys.  All pupils follow the ISEB Common Entrance syllabus, though scholarship extension groups feature for the most academic.

Following the retirement of our Head of Modern Languages after twenty-two years of outstanding service, the school seeks to appoint a suitable replacement.

As an experienced teacher of French and/or Spanish, you will work as part of a dynamic academic team committed to academic excellence.  The ideal candidate will have pastoral experience and a willingness to contribute to extra-curricular activities, whether in the performing arts, sport and/or the school’s busy and vibrant boarding environment.

All applicants must be eligible for registration with the GTCS.  This post is considered as Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

CVs to be submitted accompanied by a letter of application to headmaster@stmarysmelrose.org.uk or by post to The Headmaster, St. Mary’s School, Melrose, Scottish Borders, TD6 9LN.
