Thursday afternoon activities program

In the Michaelmas Term on a Thursday afternoon we offer an activities program.

The program was split into two, 6 week blocks, with block 1 running in the first half of the term and block 2 in the second. The staff running the activities give the children a quick 5 minute briefing on what their activity would involve and the children then made their choices.

Monksford Estate Golf Course, a privately owned 9 hole golf course provides the perfect location for pupils to experience golf for the first time.  The golf activity runs during the Michaelmas term. Miss Birdsall takes a group of children to learn about the basics of golf; grip, stance and most importantly etiquette.  During the latter part of the 5 week activity, the children experience playing on a real golf course - the most exciting part probably travelling by buggy to the tee!

This activity is just a taster of what golf is all about.  A number of children, after attending this beginner course, go on to have professional lessons and become members of a golf club.

FullSizeRender-1webBike Ability:

A  group of 8 cyclists, along Mrs Bell and Mrs Hutchison take to the streets of Melrose to practise and develop their cycling skills with the ultimate goal of passing the Cycle Scotland Safety test.  They have work with  signalling, road positioning and traffic awareness, as well as carrying out safety checks on their bikes.

CPS2Clay Pigeon Shooting :

We offer clay pigeon shooting as an activity during the Michaelmas term. Tristram Job, our local qualified instructor and Mr Purvis, himself a keen and very experienced shot, run the activity and their enthusiasm for and knowledge of all facets of shooting ensure a safe and enjoyable time is had by all.

With the superb Braidwood clay ground only 15 minutes away clay pigeon shooting is a popular activity choice at St. Mary’s. From beginners to the most experienced of shots, Braidwood offers a wide range of sporting targets.

Cooking with Chef:

Cooking gives the children essential life skills and knowledge of where their food comes from, though they seem to have too much fun to realise that they are learning!  It also fulfills part of the Scottish curriculum: successful learners and confident individuals.

Beading with the help of Mrs Harvey will suit both beginners as well as intermediate levels. Working with many different types of beads the class will learn to wire or string necklaces and bracelets as well as bookmarks, earrings, hair clips and key-fobs!

Classes are kept to a maximum of 7 people so that everyone gets as much individual attention/time as possible.
