U9 Hockey v Loretto

 Wednesday 8th December

Our final fixture of the year was at Tweedbank against Loretto.

Loretto had a team of 6 and St Mary’s had 8, so Stella offered to play for Loretto to allow all the girls to play the full match of 7-a-side.  Loretto won the toss, choosing to take first push back, so this week’s team captains Annie and Holly chose direction of play.

What a super match to umpire, play moved quickly between both teams and both defenders and attackers were kept busy.  Grace and Holly made super passes up front, linking with Bene on the wing and scored the first goal. Loretto counter attacked from the pushback, however Annie and Lottie made sure they were tackled before getting into the D.   Mary and Lizzie in midfield were quick to assist both the forwards and defenders quickly reacting to any change in direction of play.  Skilful hockey saw St Mary’s in the lead 4 - 1 at halftime.

In the second half Loretto started to challenge the St Mary’s defence, Stella was strong in midfield for Loretto, who were unlucky not to score.   The St Mary’s team continued to play well utilising the full width of the pitch and scored a further 2 goals.
Final score St Mary’s 6 – Loretto 1

A super end to the hockey season, where again they demonstrated fabulous teamwork, sportsmanship and super skills. Well done, girls.
