U13 7s Tournament at Ardvreck

This Sunday saw St. Marys taking part in the 25th Ardvreck 7s tournament. Our boys made their way up to Creiff on a crisp and bright morning ready to get stuck into some 7s. We were drawn in Group B alongside Loretto, Cargilfield, Belhaven and Ardvreck 2.
Our first match saw us take on Loretto and after a quick warm up the boys were ready to go! The boys had prepared well and got into their shape right from the start. We got off to the perfect start with an early score. Our ball retention was outstanding and we managed to score a second try. Every time Loretto got the ball there were several St. Mary’s tacklers swarming, looking for the turnover. Despite a late Loretto come back the boys held on to win 9-7.
The next match saw us take on Cargilfield. We knew this would be a real challenge as we had already played this team in the 13 aside format. We defended well in the opening minutes but eventually they proved too strong for us and forced their way over. We responded straight away with a superb break from our own half. In the end Cargilfield ran out comfortable winners but our boys really stood up to the challenge and performed well against the eventual winners of the tournament. 24-4.

Next game was Ardvreck 2. This was an opportunity for us to really flex our muscles and the boys rose to the challenge superbly. We played some brilliant 7s and scored 7 tries in the process. We came away comfortable winners. 24-3.
Our final pool match was against Belhaven and the boys knew that a win would put us into the cup semi and a loss into the charity semi. We got stuck into the match from the get go and had our tails up early on. The game was back and forward and scores were even at the break. A few late scores flattered our opponents but the boys were outstanding against the tournament finalists losing 16-6.
Finishing 3rd in our group with 2 wins and 2 losses put us into the Charity semi against the hosts Ardvreck 1. Our lads had played 13 aside against this team 10 days earlier and lost so this was a perfect opportunity to settle the scores. We kept the ball well and ran in 2 early scores through excellent attacking. A late fight back from Ardvreck was not enough to prevent a strong St. Mary’s win. 11-3 onto the final!

We were up against a very big Craigclowen team in the final and the boys were feeling the fatigue from the long day’s play. Both teams exchanged blows early on and the scores were close heading into the break. This game proved one game too many for our brave lads and we ultimately came up short losing 19-7.
Mr Rooney and I were extremely proud of all of the boys who travelled up to Creiff and we exceeded expectations with a very young and gutsy team.
Well done to Nic, Ewan, Isaac, Blair, Gregor, William, Reece, Barney, Daniel, Fergus and Charlie
MVPs of the tournament –  Nic and Ewan who were outstanding in all aspects of the game and led the team superbly well.

Mr Inwood
