U13 A boys match report

Loretto 22-09-21

This week we had a visit from Loertto, taking on our ever improving 1st XIII. The conditions were great for rugby and both teams gave it their all in the September sunshine. St Mary’s started the game extremely well and scored straight from the kick off after some super running. Loretto responded well and passed the ball to space making the most of their fast wingers. Towards the end of the first half we were under the pump after conceding 3 tries and the score was 21-5. The boys showed real heart and put together phase after phase demonstrating brilliant ball retention. We were rewarded with a try just before half time. 21-10. We had a slow start to the second half and let in another try after some lacklustre tackling, 28-10. Our lads reacted well and our tackling improved, we kept the ball and had some excellent surges up the pitch. After a sustained period of pressure we were rewarded with 2 excellent tries taking the score to 28-22. Credit must go to Loretto who fought back and after some powerful running scored another try taking their lead to 33-22. In true St. Mary’s fashion our boys never gave up and threw everything at Loretto with hard running and outstanding work at the breakdown. We scored 2 more tries taking us into the lead with a couple of minutes to go. The last minutes were frantic as both teams threw the kitchen sink at it to get a result. St Mary’s held on for a fabulous victory.

I was very proud of all the boys involved and it was superb to see them improving from the last match. A well-deserved victory, onto next week.

Score: St. Mary’s 34 - Loretto 33                           Scorers: Nic x4, Barney, Finlay

Player of the match – Nic J. who showed real desire when carrying the ball swatting away defenders and scoring 4 tries. An excellent defensive display as well.
