1st XIII match report vs Earlston High

This week our boys took on Earlston in a match where emotions were high as it would be last time our form 8s played rugby for St. Mary’s. We had played Earlston earlier in the season and had competed well but struggled against some of their bigger strike runners. The boys knew they would have to move the ball around and work very hard as a team to get around the bigger opposition.

We started the game quickly and kept the ball over multiple phases. Our work at the breakdown was excellent and we had quick ball to play with. The pressure was on and we opened the scoring with a darting run from John I. 7-0. Earlston had not had the ball yet and we knew from the kick off we would need to make our tackles. The commitment from our boys was superb with low tackles and dominant collisions leading to a turn over and we put the pressure back on them scoring another try out wide through John T. Earlston came back into the game and scored a breakaway try from their own half and another from a scrum in our 22. This was a reminder to our boys of how dangerous they could be. 14-14. The response from our boys was superb and we fought back scoring a cheeky try around the ruck as Josh spotted some space. Half time 19-14.

In the second half we knew the first score would be vital and we flew out of the blocks. Our defence drove them backwards and when they coughed up possession we were able to strike as Ted scored a try after some excellent running from the forwards. 24-14. There was a real belief in the boy’s faces and no one wanted to let one another down. Our bravery in defence took their big runners out of the game and our ball retention meant we kept the pressure on. Another score from John T. followed after some darting runs from our wingers. 29-14. Throughout the game our ability to move the ball was critical in finding space and this was evident in our final score of the game. After some brilliant carries we found ourselves in the opposition half with lots of space out wide. We moved the ball through the hands and Tristan found the ball in his hands with a 4 on 1 overlap outside. No surprise he ran head first into the defender but managed to score the try all the same. 36-14. To Earlston’s credit they did not give up and scored another try in the closing moments leaving the final score 36-21.

What a fantastic way to send off our form 8 boys. I was incredibly proud of all of the boys and it has been a pleasure to work with them throughout the year. Well done.

John T – True captain’s performance, 2 tries to go with some superb defending.
George – A colossus in defence, driving boys of all sizes back from whence they came.
Ted – Great scavenger work and outstanding work rate for the team in both attack and defence.
Geordie – Superb in all aspects of the match, punching well above his weight.
Ed – Great service from 9 and several sniping runs to go with the usual brave tackling.
