U13B v Ardvreck U13B
Wednesday 20th November 2019
This was a "B" match in name alone and both teams gave their all in a cracking match played at a furious tempo out on the smooth plastic baize of the Greenyards.
The St. Mary's side, captained by Ed, fielded Angus, Blair and Isaac B in the front row with Isaac S, Robert and Archie D behind. Outside Captain Ed in the backs were John I, Josh, Ollie dG and Archie J. They faced off against a big and skilful Ardvreck side with plenty of power. No quarter was asked or given in a ferocious opening period.
Captain Ed was a constant threat at the breakdown and was up fast in the defensive line to fell the big boys like Faf de Klerk. John and Josh tackled like tigers and the forward unit of the Isaacs, Robert, Blair, Archie D and Angus really laid the platform for our fast boys; Ollie dG and Archie J to attack out wide.
Passing was silky from both teams and the breakdown was hotly contested. Ollie dG scored the first try with a typical bullocking run through the midfield. When he could no longer roll out of tackles he just ran over them taking two green and white defenders with him on the way to the first try.
Josh followed this with a super score of his own as he jinked through two tackles and sold a dummy that the Ardvreck fullback would have bought at any price before dotting down wide and right.
However, Ardvreck were not to be overcome and, even though they were rattled, they roared back into the game with two quick tries to level the score. Ed closed out the half with a super score as a quick tap and go from Isaac B had opened up the visitors' defence. With John steaming on to Ed's popped pass there was not enough time for the scramble defence to get back on their feet before Ed picked up at the base of the ruck to flop over for the most slender of half-time leads.
St. Marys' B 3 - 2 Ardvreck B
John started the half with two super scores as he went through the Ardvreck defence like a wisp of smoke before Josh scored arguably the try of the season. Ed was a revelation at scrum-half and this sublime score was built on the back of his hard running from the base of the ruck. His quick feet and gas took him away from the fringe defence and then he was off and running into the wild green yonder. He was reeled in just before the try line but had the vision to pop the ball off the deck to John who bulleted a pass to Josh coming into space at pace. There was no stopping the Lauder lad and he cruised in wide and left.
Ed followed up with a second score and Archie J rounded out the match with a great effort but it was Angus' try that really showed how far this group of boys has come. Collecting a flat pass from Robert on the 22 he pinned his ears back and rampaged forward. When no one took his legs he just kept pumping forward before support from Isaac S and Isaac B and Blair caught up to drive him over the whitewash - what a score!
St. Mary's B 9 - 3 Ardvreck B
This was arguably the best St. Mary's team performance of the season. What a game. What a team.
