St. Mary's U9 Football v Loretto

On Wednesday the 6th of February, St. Marys set off from school to travel up to Loretto. We arrived ahead of schedule so this allowed the boys to get a good warm up and a longer match. Two St. Marys squads of nine named the Comets and the Galaxy faced two Loretto teams.
The Comets began the game with six players starting, two players on the bench and one St. Marys boy on the Loretto side to even out the numbers. Every few minutes boys were moved around positions to give everyone a shot at playing where they wanted and substitutes were made frequently as well. In the match the team performed superbly to get a 4-2 win over a strong Loretto team. St. Marys passed the ball very fell and were calm in defence, to start off the game St. Marys played quite high up the pitch and this paid off with an early goal. Loretto went on to score two good goals in quick succession. After the 15 minutes first half St. Marys were 2-1, the boys huddled up and discussed what was going well and on what could be improved. The Comets then worked hard to score 3 goals in the second half which were well deserved.

The Galaxy also played in a six aside game against a strong Loretto team who only had six players. The first period was very evenly matched with both teams playing some entertaining football both having chances to score had it not been for some very good goal keeping by Daniel Lewis St Marys could have been four goals down. Just before the break a fine solo effort from the Loretto centre forward scored a lovely goal to make the score 1-0 at half time. Like the Comets we rotated the players making sure that all the boys got plenty of game time. The second period was as exciting as the first evenly matched up until the last five minutes when Loretto scored three goals to make the final score 4-0. All the boys played well but where beaten by a better team on the day. Two very good games and we look forward to playing Loretto again in March.
