U11B's v Merchiston Castle

Wednesday 31st October

The U11 B’s travelled to Edinburgh on Wednesday for their second meeting of the season with Merchiston.

Winning the toss the hosts elected to take the tap and pass to start the match, and for 2 minutes Merchiston kept possession really well with St Marys unable to get their hands on the ball though they tackled well. Eventually though Merchiston made the breakthrough and went one try up
St Marys then started to get hands on ball themselves and got more into the game as we enjoyed better territory. After good driving play by Robert L and Christian G we were inside the ’22. The ball then came out to Isaac S after a ruck and he drove over the line to square the match. Merchiston continued to show their good passing and offloading game as they attempted to stretch us one way then the other. But good St. Marys defence kept them at bay as Finlay B, Archie D and Hector C amongst others put in the tackles. However it was Merchiston who re-took the lead after some good lead up play.
The next 5 minutes were fairly even as both teams looked to drive forward and move ball wide in an attempt to outflank each other. During this time Fergus Y, Jack H and Rory C all had probing runs at the home defence. However, right on halftime, it was Tom B who took matters in hand and drove at the Merchiston defence with determination and he crossed the line to once again square things up again. Halftime 2-2.
The 2nd half started well for us as we had an increased enthusiasm and determination about us to run at the home defence. A good Isaac S drive was taken on by Finlay B who in turn fed Tom D who crashed over to put St. Marys ahead for the first time. Both teams were giving their all but defences stood firm. Then a Torquil H pass to Fergus Y saw the latter make good ground before handing over to Tom D who again crashed over well to extend our lead. Just as we threatened to pull away in the match, Merchiston raised their game and came back at us as good handling and a good finish saw them reduce our lead to 1.
The next score was going to be important. So up stepped Archie D with a great pass to Hector C who had his dancing feet on which allowed him to waltz through defenders and feed that man again Tom D who ran well to get in at the corner. 5-3. St. Marys struck again immediately as an Archie D pick up from the ground to Tom D sent him in for his 5th! At that moment our boys sensed they could put the match out of reach so Christian G drove but his scoring pass was dropped. Then Hector C danced again after nice Jack H pass, and when Hector offloaded to the supporting Christian G he was not going to be stopped as he got over the line with intent! Merchiston tried to throw ball wide in their attempt to claw back a try, but a loose pass after a thumping Christian G tackle was scooped up by Robert L who cruised over to make the final score 8-3.
Well done both teams who played positively and with enthusiasm which made for an entertaining match. Thank you to Merchiston who again hosted us so well. Next week Compass.
