U11B Football v Mowden Hall

 Wednesday 31st Jan

The “B’s” welcomed Mowden to St. Marys on Wednesday for our first football match of the term. It was good to get a match in, though the bitterly cold wind reminded us that it was still very much winter.

It was Mowden who started the better as they moved ball about slickly and looked to get heads up to make the pass. As a result, they hit us with a quick One-Two in the 2nd and 4th minute to go 2 up.

However St. Marys steadied the ship as we tackled and defended more solidly. Archie J led from the front as he put in a power of work to bring us into the match through his selfless running and tackling. During this period he was assisted well by Jack H, Isaac B and George R. Good goalkeeping by Tristan B also helped to make sure the score-line didn’t get away from us.

Play for the next 15 minutes was more even now, and we had our moments in attack. Archie J up the left flank was getting in good crosses, but the ball didn’t seem to break for us in the box. By now George and Tristan swapped positions with the latter breaking up play well in midfield. Alex N-N in front of our back 3, along with Isaac S, kept matters more secure at the back. Then, just on halftime and against the run of play, Mowden added a 3rd with a good shot to the far post. 0-3

The 2nd half saw St. Marys push to try to get that opening goal to close the gap. We worked hard to raise our intensity and threatened the Mowden goal though without making a clear-cut chance. At the back Toby T and Torquil H got in a couple of good tackles to help keep Mowden at bay. However, 7 minutes in a Mowden shot going wide hit off George R and crept in.

We continued to push forward and tried hard to open our account which was to our credit. Archie J came close with a shot but it just went wide. Again St. Marys enjoyed a good period as play went end to end. But on time up, it was Mowden who scored a further goal as they hit us on the break after we came close to scoring at the other end which summed up our afternoon.

However, well done to both teams who put on an entertaining match despite the freezing conditions. We look forward to our next game which hopefully the weather won’t influence.
