U11B Rugby v Ardvreck
Wednesday 22nd November
Ardvreck were our visitors this week on a very wet and cold November afternoon. They chose to take the tap and pass to start the match. They kept possession well during that first play and kept recycling despite good St. Marys tackling. Eventually it broke down and St. Marys had the scrum put in.
Ollie de G took play forward and linked with Archie J and Isaac B to take us deep into the opposition 22. From the ruck Alex M passed out to George R who drove well and offloaded to the supporting Captain Archie J who dived over to open the scoring.
Over the next few minutes the match was fairly even as both teams ran at and probed each other’s defence. Both teams tackled well, and this allied to the conditions made handling difficult with further scoring opportunities hard to engineer. During this spell George R, Archie J, Ollie de G and Robbie L all defended well. They were also all involved alongside Isaac S when driving with ball in hand. On one such drive by Ollie de G he offloaded to George R who finished well to add our 2nd try. A minute later Archie J made it 3 when he pounced on a loose Ardvreck pass as they attempted to get ball wide.
At this stage of the match Ardvreck had good possession and tried hard to pull a try back before halftime. St. Marys held firm though, and then an excellent run from Robbie L took his team up to the Ardvreck line where quick ruck ball allowed Ollie de G to get over the line and make the halftime score 4-0.
The 2nd half started just as our boys had hoped. No dozing after the halftime break this week. George R took the pass off on the hoof and he broke through. When stopped he offloaded to Ollie de G who ran in free to score. Ardvreck reacted well though and put us under some pressure as they tried to up their intensity. Play took place in the St. Marys half for the next couple of minutes and the visitors got their reward for some determined and skilful running in the conditions to score their opening try.
This relieved the pressure in our half and we gradually made our way up the pitch from the restart. Isaac B drove low and got us up into the 22. From the ruck Alex M fed George R who was stopped short. From the scrum Archie J fed Ollie de G outside him and Ollie drove over from close range.6-1
Ardvreck came back themselves, and indeed scored a good try after more good handling and offloading. From the restart Ardvreck again pushed us back towards our goal-line as they attempted to close the gap. However an Isaac S pick up of a loose Ardvreck pass allowed us to move ball to Ollie de G then George R who drove up-field. The supporting Archie J took the final pass and he finished well to score our final try of the match.
Well done to both teams who strove to play running and handling rugby despite the poor weather. Thanks to Ardvreck for making the journey down to St. Marys.
