On Wednesday afternoon the St. Mary’s 1st XV, shorn of the five players representing the Dandylions, took on a big and determined Longridge team.
We fielded an experienced backline captained by Alex Fraser at flyhalf with Caelan at 9 and Archies Mac and Mo in the centres. Callum, Thomas and Antony filled the back three slots. Hamish Oliver E and Jake started in the front row with Mac and Dicken in the second row. Ollie C, Matt B and Fergus played in the back row.
The match kicked off and St. Mary’s, playing uphill were soon under the cosh as Longridge sent their big forward pack rolling down the slope. Sharp tackling held them out and we were much stronger at both the breakdown and in the scrum.
However, we were just unable to break out of our half. Somewhat against the run of play we managed to conjure a score just before half time for Thomas before Alex slotted the extras.
The second half was a scrappy affair with Longridge pinned back on their line for the duration and St. Mary’s just unable to thread the final pass to round off a number of cracking opportunities. Tackling was good from both sides.
Two scores finally came for Matt Ballantyne and star player AN Other. The latter’s identity remains unknown as a number of players in the vicinity claim to have got a paw on the egg in an unsightly in-goal incident!
Overall, this was a really enjoyable run-out for the team and a match played in excellent spirits by both sides.
Final Score: St. Mary’s 1st XV 19 – 0 Longridge Towers
