U11B Rugby v U11B Merchiston

 1.11.17

The U11 B’s entertained their Merchiston counterparts on Wednesday on a wet and cold afternoon. St Marys offered their visitors the choice of starting the match and they duly elected to take the tap and pass. A good decision as they scored the opening try off the first play, albeit helped by some dubious tackling.

St. Marys settled in nicely though after their slow start and in fact for the next 12 minutes or so we probably had the slight edge. Both teams came close to scoring during that period, but neither were able to take the opportunity to score. This was in part due to good defence or a handling error with the wet ball. Archie J, Ollie de G and Robbie L came closest aided by Isaac B and George R. Then Merchiston strung some nice passes together to move the ball wide and score in the corner. 0-2.

St. Marys lifted their intensity after this with George R and Ollie de G making good runs. Both Isaac B and Isaac S were driving forward well up front, and Jack H and Alex M linked well with ball in hand and looked to bring other support players into play. However, St Marys just couldn’t get over the line, and in the last 2 minutes of the half Merchiston added 2 further tries to make the score 0-4 at halftime.

The start of the half saw a couple of changes with Henry S and George R switching matches, and Torquil H coming on for the injured Ollie de G. Although slightly deflated over halftime, St. Marys nevertheless made a good start which saw them pressing in the Merchiston ’22. However despite this the visitors not only stood firm but they ran in 2 quick tries from deep and thus snuffed out any chance of a home comeback. However our boys kept at it and had a good spell for the next 10 minutes. Archie J and Henry S both came close to scoring, but Merchiston defended well. Another injury saw Jack H leave the field. After repelling these home close calls, Merchiston went on to add a further 3 tries at the end of the match.

Today was a hard lesson for our boys in that when scoring opportunities come along, after you have worked hard for them, you must take them. Better concentration, using the players in space and a determination to get there was the stark difference between the 2 teams. However it was good to see the boys disappointed in themselves and looking forward to the next match to be better.
