1st VIII v Belhaven

STM 7n- BH 2

Wed 11th Oct

The weather today did eventually clear but sadly not in time for our match; we got soaked and I mean soaked! However, despite the drenching, the girls played some lovely hockey and came away with a thoroughly deserved win.

We arrived at Tweedbank in plenty of time for a good warm up so by the time the game started, the girls were ready and hit the ground running. Subsequently, from the opening whistle, Maria intercepted the ball from the Belhaven push back, threaded the ball to Jessica who passed to Hannah who then found Mhairi waiting at the far post, who scored, all within perhaps 15 seconds! Thereafter the game levelled out slightly but we managed to retain the lion’s share of possession. Jessica, playing centre mid, made some lovely runs but was supported superbly on all sides. Maria, playing on the left, was immediately involved and showed great awareness and skill. As did Freya who played on the right. Freya, in the second half in particular, used the width very effectively and often found herself in lots of space. Some great stick work from her helped keep possession and her work rate was impressive.

Up front, Mhairi and Hannah worked superbly together. Positionally they knew exactly where each other were but moreover, they worked sideways and back very well to receive the ball. Isla and Molly in defence were strong. Once or twice they allowed forwards to get on the wrong side of them but their awareness and vision were excellent, as were their forages forward. Tegan in goal was alert but a bystander for large chunks of the first half. On the occasions when the ball did venture towards her goal, she was assertive and cleared the ball very efficiently, one shot was particularly well saved.

The second half saw the Belhaven girls start well and both sides scored goals, 2 a piece, which made the score 5 – 2. However, we managed to score two more towards the end of the half to round off a superb afternoon.

I was delighted with the girls today. As a team, they supported each other really well in all areas of the pitch. Sticks skills were strong from all 7 outfield players and the work rate from all of them was impressive. Half term next week, so I think our next outing is to the Fettes tournament on November 1st.
