1st Hockey v Cargilfield

Wednesday 27th September

Cargilfield 1, St. Mary’s 5
The squad: Jessica (captain), Isla, Iona, Tegan, Maria, Rowan, Hannah, Mhairi, Eliza, Rosie and Lara.

Following this morning’s news that the 2nd’s match had to be knocked on the head, we set forth for Peffermill with a slightly larger squad, which gave a few others a thoroughly merited opportunity to represent the 1sts.
We arrived in ample time for a warm up, so took to the field at 2.30pm, ready and raring to go. For the opening five minutes we dominated the game, making several forays into the Cargilfield D, one of which resulted in a goal, courtesy of a lovely strike from Jessica. Cargilfield equalised before half time so we went into the break 1 - 1.
We decided to play a slightly longer second half, to give all the girls maximum opportunity on the pitch. This saw most girls playing out of position at some stage or other, but that didn’t seem to affect the team’s fluidity or ability to support one another. We were much hungrier for the ball in the second period, much more purposeful and all the girls took the bit between their teeth. Jessica scored another, Hannah and Mhairi also got on the score sheet and the team played some lovely hockey. It was good to see Lara and Eliza making their debut for the team and both girls were instrumental in the second half goals. Iona, Isla and Rowan all played well, regardless of where they were on the pitch, strong in the tackle and quick to take free hits from the back. Tegan made some good saves in goal and of particular note today were both her clearances and her communication with her defence. Maria, Rosie, Hannah and Mhairi linked well. Some delightful interchanges saw them weave their way into the Cargilfield danger zone many times and more often than not they emerged with either a free hit, a short corner or a goal!
So, with only a few days to go before the Loretto tournament, this was a great confidence boost. Well done to all the girls. Sunday’s tournament starts slightly earlier than previously thought, at 10.00am, so we aim to leave school at 0830. Hope to see you there.
Mr P.
