U9A Hockey v Cargilfield

Wednesday 27th September

Mrs Routledge and myself appreciated having the opportunity to include all the Form 3 and 4 girls in the fixture today, playing in three 5 a side matches. The form 3 girls particularly looked forward to this, their first fixture for St Mary’s and although they certainly enjoyed the hockey, the mini bus journey and match tea were also a highlight!

The A team, consisting of all form 4 girls, had experienced Cargilfield before and they arrived expecting a hard game from this strong opposition.

In the first half St Mary’s held their positions well which helped them to defend the persistent attack from the Cargilfield players. Cargilfield quickly found their winning form scoring three goals in quick succession. St Mary’s were apprehensive, standing off the ball rather than going in for the tackle and gave Cargilfield far too much time and space to move with the ball.
St Mary’s lost the first half 6-0 but after a team talk at half time they went in to the second half with a more confident and determined attitude. They demonstrated better stick skills compared with Cargilfield, used the width of the pitch much better but need to used their speed and strength much more to be able to move the ball forward. It was a much more successful second half where they spend a great percentage of time in an attacking position.

Half way through the second half Nicole and Freya moved the ball up the right hand side of the pitch beautifully and then finished this with a superb pass into Zara who was waiting in the goal mouth to pop the ball over the line. This was a wonderful moment and it was so good to see the girls remembering what they had been told and following the game plan.

This was a much needed confidence boost. Lily and Celia playing in defence, battled tirelessly against the strong Cargilfield attack and they prevented numerous goals from being scored.

The second half score was a much more respectable 3-1 loss. Well done St Mary’s for keeping your heads up, enjoying the game and maintaining concentration. The final score was 9-1 to Cargilfield. This team have a lot to learn and I know the score will be closer in the rematch later in the term.

Well played Celia (this week’s Captain), Freya, Lily, Nicole and Zara.
