1st XV v Belhaven

Wednesday 27th September

Wednesday’s match could be accurately described as a game of two halves. The match was keenly contested in the second half but was all but over by half-time as Belhaven ran in 3 tries in the opening 10 minutes.
Will S scored a good individual try toward the end of the first half but we were just not aggressive enough at the breakdown to achieve parity with a hard-nosed Belhaven pack.
William Mac and Ollie E packed down either side of Matt B at hooker and Dicken and Mac R formed a big second row. Jamie F played at Number 8 with Captain William T at 9, Tommy at 10 and Thomas E and Will S filled the centres. Archie Mo and Alex F took the wing slots and Caelan started at full back. Ollie C started the match but was soon introduced as a hooker/prop.
With Dandylion trials looming today was a good opportunity for senior players to step up against their direct challengers. Unfortunately, we came up well short of the required mark in a number of instances.
We may be out-skilled or over-powered by opponents but we should never be out-willed by those who want it more.
Half-Time: St. Mary’s 1st XV 5 – 15 Belhaven Hill School
The second half was a much closer affair with the forwards working hard to win the midfield armwrestle and the backs stringing some good passes together. The wrong option was taken on a number of occasions and we butchered more than a couple of scoring opportunities by passing too early or overrunning the ball in support.
Belhaven scored two breakaway tries in the second half but a match that had started as a rout ended up a finely balanced contest between two decent sides.
Final Score: St. Mary’s 5 – 27 Belhaven Hill School
Coach’s Notes: We are still carrying passengers; players unwilling to commit to the game and give their all. This has been noted. Time is almost up for those seeking representative honours. Now is the time to man-up and get stuck in from the very first whistle to the last of every game.
