1st Hockey v Kilgraston

Wednesday  20th September
St. Mary’s 5, Kilgraston 0

Following our successful afternoon last Wednesday against Gala Academy, today the girls took to the pitch, buoyant, confident and eager to build on last week’s success. In order to get as many girls playing hockey as we could, we split today’s game, so the 1sts played the first half and the 2nds played the second. With only 20 minutes to get a result, the girls needed a good start and that is precisely what they got!

From the outset, we dominated play. Our stick skills were strong, as was our support play and I was thrilled with the cohesion of the team. No matter where we found ourselves on the pitch, options were available and used to excellent affect. The front two of Hannah and Mhairi worked well together. Some intricate passes enabled them to pass the Kilgraston defence on numerous occasions, which resulted in 3 goals for Hannah and a number of near chances for Mhairi.
In the midfield, Lucy, Jessica and Maria supported the team superbly, both in attack and defence. At times they got drawn into the centre of the pitch which narrowed our channels, but they soon realised the benefits and importance of maintaining width with some excellent runs down both touchlines. Isla, Iona and Phoebe at the back were kept busy too. Phoebe made a couple of important saves and some strong and accurate clearances turned defence into attack with one kick of the ball! Isla and Iona were vigilant and also worked well together. I was pleased to see them support our offensive moves, without over-committing and leaving Phoebe stranded!

So, all in all this was an excellent performance from the girls. Jessica led her team with purpose and scored a couple of excellent goals herself. Next week we travel to Peffermill to play Cargilfield, pushback is at 2.30pm.
