U11B Rugby v Merchiston

13.9.17

The U11’s travelled to Edinburgh on Wednesday for their first fixture of the season. The weather was just about remaining dry, so the boys were looking forward to playing an open handling game.

St Mary’s won the toss and elected to take the pass off. An astute decision as our captain Stewart M took the ball on the hoof and ran hard through a gap whilst out pacing the chasing defence to open the scoring. Merchiston then demonstrated their capabilities as they drove from the restart and 2 rucks later moved ball to score in the corner. From the restart St Mary’s repeated their opening tactic and again Stewart scored.

Moments later Merchiston were in possession inside the St Mary’s half. A loose pass allowed Archie J to pounce on it and feed out to Oliver L who once in the clear was not about to be stopped! Oliver then added another try after some good Robbie L lead up play and offload. 4-1. Then Isaac B drove forward well and passed to the supporting Robbie who took it on further and then gave it to Oliver to finish the play off with another try. Merchiston were beginning to find it difficult to stop the direct and offloading play of St Mary’s. This was evident when Stewart took procession from a touchline pass off and again drove at a gap breaking through to score.

However, Merchiston were having their moments, ball in hand. They drove deep into St Mary’s territory but a well-placed tackle by Archie stopped the try in the corner. From the pass in Stewart took ball forward and Isaac B and Alex M recycled well. The ball went wide to Oliver who ran it well from distance to score. Merchiston were undaunted and kept at it to be rewarded with a try in the corner after some good lead up play. 7-2.

St Mary's didn’t waste time and were soon pressing in the home’22 after Jack and Robbie interchanged passes to gain territory. Merchiston defended well but eventually some good interplay involving Isaac S, Stewart and Isaac B put Archie in enough space to squeeze in at the corner. The home side then pushed up into the visitors ’22 and despite good tackling Archie stopped them short with a good tackle preventing a try. Just on half time Oliver then scored a lovely individual try from halfway as he used his pace to beat several defenders on his way.

The 2nd half started with Isaac S driving forward well and offload to Stewart M who made the line to score. Archie J, after Alex M made some good ground, then added another. St. Marys again took play into home territory and a good Robbie L tackle and turnover allowed Jack H and Isaac S to inter-pass and were stopped just short of the try line. By now captain Stewart M was off the pitch with a knock. Both teams then added a try each with Ollie L scoring ours. Robbie L from a scrum then ran strongly and jinked well to beat a couple of defenders and score the final try.

Well done to all players as everyone worked hard and looked to do their best. No match next week, but there will be a Triangular at Fettes in a fortnight.
