Wednesday 13th September
St. Mary’s 3, Gala Academy 0

As the torrential rain and hail eased, a young Gala side made their way to the pitch. We’d arrived a good time beforehand, sought refuge from the rain in the dugouts and started perhaps half an hour late.

The girls were eager to get started and threw their heart and soul into the first half. We made a great start. We piled the pressure onto the Gala defence but they resisted and thwarted attack after attack. Until that is Jessica collected the ball in her own half and dribbled past almost their entire team and slotted home the opening goal.

The score remained 1 - 0 until a few minutes into the second half. Rowan, Isla, Ruby and Maria had continued to threaten the Gala goal and not long after Jessica’s opener, Rowan got on the end of a cross and swept home our second goal of the afternoon. It was a fanatic strike and a fitting way to finish off a lovely move. Freya, Lucy and Phoebe played in wide positions and helped to retain the team’s structure. As the game was reaching its conclusion, there was some brilliant link and support play on show, aided and abetted by the three girls holding their width.

At the back Iona and Isla showed superb progress in maintaining a watchful eye on opposing players. A tendency to ball watch in last week’s game gave the opposition too much time and space on the ball, but not so today. The Gala attack were marked closely and at no time were there any players unmarked in our ‘D’. Tegan in goal had a blinder. With large chunks of the game played in the opposition’s half, she did well to remain focused and, when called upon, made a number of brilliant saves.

Isla put the result beyond doubt moments before the final whistle and scored the team’s third goal. Some great individual skills allowed her to sneak through the Gala back line to score her first goal of the season.

So, a great afternoon, a great result and well done to all the girls for their hard work on the pitch. Next week we welcome Kilgraston to Melrose. In a slight change to the fixture list, next week, the 1sts and 2nds are going to play a triangular against the Kilgraston 1sts and the 3rds and U11s are going to play a triangular against the Kilgraston U11s. First matches start at 2.30pm.
