U12’s hockey v Heriots A’s

STM 1 – Heriots 4

It was a strong turnout for the U12’s this afternoon as all 13 girls in Form 7 hit the pitch to take on the mighty Heriots. We knew it would be a tough game against a much larger school, so it was agreed that we would do ‘rolling subs’ so that everyone could give 110% when on the pitch, knowing they would not be playing all the time. The girls outdid themselves in doing this, and although it was a very tough match that did not go in our favour, everyone dug deep and played to their very best for every second they were on the pitch. All I ever ask is commitment to the team and to the game, which is exactly what occurred at Tweedbank today.

Despite what the score suggests, there was some excellent hockey played by the St. Mary’s girls and certainly as the game went on, the standard increased. At times, we lacked structure and communication with each other so these will be a focus in training sessions, yet in the second half we had many opportunities at goal, but sadly could not get the ball to go over the line. Our defence were put under a lot of pressure from the fast and furious Heriots attack, but the girls showed fearlessness at many times during the 40 minutes and made some strong tackles, fantastic saves and cleared the ball out wide with control and composure under pressure. The midfields ran and ran and ran. They supported the defence well which was vital to stop the score against us being higher. They also worked hard to push the ball up the field. The attackers were skilful and used their speed to pick the ball up at pace and charge into the D. They had many opportunities, with the help of the mids, at getting shots off at the goal. Our one goal was a great team effort. Some super passing into the D and a tap over the line made the 13 St. Mary’s girls very happy.

Well done to everyone today and thank you to Heriots for coming down to play us. The better team won, but the St. Mary’s girls did their very best and they should all be proud of never giving up. A fantastic team effort!
