2nd VIII Hockey v Loretto

Final score: STM 3 – Loretto 2

Today saw the 2nd team venture out on their first fixture of the 2017 hockey season and they were off to Musselburgh, to play against our friends at Loretto. Neither team had had much time to practise prior to today so we were all still rather rusty! Therefore, both umpires were doing a bit of coaching from the side-lines as well as talking the teams through short-corners when they arose. The teams were really evenly matched and there was not one side that had most of the possession over the 40 minutes. The ball went back and forth with some exciting moments in the D for both sides but it was Loretto who took the lead first when they scored from a short corner. The St. Mary’s girls were quick to follow suit and at last we managed to control the ball in the D and Maria took her chance to score after a lovely cross from Eliza. As half time approached Rowan, Ruby and Freya were holding their positions as forwards when Loretto were talking a hit out, and Rowan managed to intercept the ball and have a clear shot at goal, which made its way over the line much the team’s delight. We were one goal ahead at half time and needed to keep our wits about us. The girls now needed to focus on their marking and not giving the ball away as soon as they received it.

Eager to level the score Loretto were picking up the pace at the start of the second half and our defenders Tegan and Molly had their work cut out but made some excellent clears when the ball was in our D. However, Loretto’s were determined to keep the pressure on but our legs were beginning to tire. This meant as a team, we could not keep up the strength to continue tackling or running back to help defend, so they managed to get another goal. Anna, our intrepid goalie, did make some cracking saves which reminded the others that they did not need to stand ‘protecting’ her all the time in the D but could move around to put pressure on any approaching opposition players.

In the last 5 minutes the momentum shifted from being fatigued one second to being full-on all guns blazing the next! Both teams still had plenty of goes at goal and it was our mids out on the wings, Maria and Lucy who kept working hard to make tackles and bring the ball back up so we could go for goal again. Luckily, a shot from Maria rebounded off the Loretto goalie giving us the final lead with only a couple of minutes to spare.

Everyone was rather exhausted at the end of the first game after a long summer off. However, it was a great result that could have gone either way but we were able to just nab the win. With the teams so evenly matched at this stage of the season, it will be great to see what happens in a months time when we host Loretto at Tweedbank for the return fixture. There is plenty to work on until then but what a positive start to the season. Well done girls!
