Loretto 5, St. Mary’s 0
1st VIII hockey 6 sept

Today’s game at Loretto was our first of the season, and with the exception of a quick run out on Monday, it was my first opportunity to watch the girls play hockey.
The score line might suggest rather a one-sided encounter? However, had it not been for some first class goal keeping from the Loretto keeper, we would have given Loretto a much closer run for their money.
This young side stepped up well today. With the experience of Iona, Isla, Phoebe and Jessica to call upon, the younger girls, Mhairi, Molly S, Hannah and Rosie rose well to the challenge of playing a much faster game against some older girls. I was impressed with some of the stick skills on show. With little time or space on the ball, the girls were often able to find a yard on their opponents, though just lacked a little strength at times to execute the pass or shot. That said, we created many scoring opportunities. Some superb linking with the midfield players, Molly, Jessica and Rosie and the front two of Mhairi and Hannah, so nearly paved the way to a handful of goals. Perhaps a little more composure in front of goal would have made the difference?
So, plenty to work on. Defensively, Phoebe made some excellent saves and Iona and Isla made many fantastic tackles. However, too often Loretto outnumbered us in our D and made us pay for it! The girls came off the pitch suitably exhausted, having given their all and that’s all anyone can ask! Next week we host Gala Academy at Tweedbank, starting at 4pm.
