U13B Cricket v Fettes

24th May 2017
The U13 “B” side travelled to Fettes on Wednesday on a fine and warm afternoon for cricket. It was good to get a match again after a couple of weeks break.

St. Marys fielded first and immediately the home side set about our bowlers who found it tough for the first few overs. Forty runs were quickly put onto the scoreboard, but just when we needed it Thomas M bowled out their opener. This was followed by a 2nd wicket as Jamie F then bowled out the no.3 with his first ball! This slowed the run rate for a little while, but it didn’t take the home team too long to regain their poise and start piling the runs on again.

Our opening bowlers were supported by Matt B, Joe W and Fergus H who also turned their arms over, and the boys tried hard to keep to line and length. By and large they were successful but the strength of the home batting meant that anything straying off line was put away. Jamie F then chipped in with another good wicket as he again knocked over the stumps with the score on 116. Jamie went on to complete a good 4 over spell.

A half century by the second opener saw him retired but it brought little relief. The good run rate continued, but there were still good fielding moments. Antony de G, William Mac and Hamish R had some good run saving stops on the boundary. Dicken B patrolled gully well and also stopped runs. Then William T had a brilliant run out as he picked up the ball off the ground and direct hit the stumps from mid- wicket!

The innings closed with another run out with the final ball for Fettes to end up on 172-5. A high score but one that reflected the strength in depth Fettes have. Only last week they had indeed scored well over 200.

Scoring 173 was going to be a tall order. However they were determined to try and give a good account of themselves. The opening bowlers were quick and straight. William Mac again swung wildly and across the line and lost his middle stump when on 3. Matt B then went 1st ball as he was bowled behind his legs.  However Jamie F and Joe W, who now came to the crease, played with defiance and determination. They played with a straight bat and only attacked off line bowls which was the plan.

They had a fighting and lengthy partnership to prevent a collapse until Jamie F went for 10 after he was caught out. Captain Thomas M then kept to the script of defiance, and although out for 4 he stuck around. William T then went 2nd ball as he was also bowled behind his legs as he moved too far across his crease.

However Dicken B dug in really well along with Joe W. to see out the innings. Dicken finished on 10 not out for his best innings of the season, well done. Joe ended on 19 not out and must be commended for the way he fought. Well done.

St. Marys ended on 68 for 5 and although well beaten they achieved the aim of trying to use all of the 20 overs for the first time this season. They fought well against a very strong Fettes team who demonstrated their strength of depth in all departments.  Next week Belhaven.
