U11A Cricket v Cargilfield

Wednesday 3rd May

U11A Cricket 3 may

The St. Mary’s U11A cricket team enjoyed a much improved performance against Cargilfield out on the Front Field.

Playing under the sun and in front of a gaggle of enthusiastic spectators Captain Mac R led his team out on to the pitch to field first. Captain Mac bowled first and soon got stuck into the visiting batsmen with some lovely line and length bowling. Runs were hard to come by for the Cargie batsmen as Mac then Frederick sent down some super deliveries. Mac took three good wickets in his third over with Frederick recording a fourth to leave Cargilfield staring into the abyss on 24 – 4.

Good teams rally well under pressure and the Cargilfield batsmen dug in before starting to score freely. The St. Mary’s fielding loosened at this stage and the cordon allowed too many cheap runs to squeeze through the gaps. Backing up and taking the right option when shying at the stumps will save us a lot of runs in future contests.

Of real note was the emergence of bowlers like Archie Mac, Stewart M and Mitchell C. They bowled tight overs and asked questions of the batsmen. I was also delighted with the keeping of Frederick and the fielding of Geordie and Thomas. The latter took a couple of really good catches and bravely threw himself in the path of the cherry from silly mid on.

The fielding was also much better as Archie Mo, Alexander M and Caelan scrapped for every ball that came their way.

Unfortunately, we let the match slip away a little in the second half of Cargilfield’s innings as they began to pile on the runs as the intensity of the home fielding and bowling dropped a little.

At tea St. Mary’s faced a big total of 130 – 8.

St. Mary’s pupils are a strong-willed bunch and they set about the Cargilfield attack with wild abandon. I did not see a huge amount of defensive batting but was delighted to see a succession of batsmen have a real go at the visitors. Archie Mo and Mitchell played well before Caelan and Jake took the field. The latter was very unlucky to be run out by a direct hit from near the boundary. Frederick was also run out by the same fielder from backward square leg.

However, the St. Mary’s runs were mounting up and Stewart and Mac formed an effective mid-order partnership. Thomas slashed and parried and bludgeoned some good shots to the leg boundary. Geordie also looked good with the bat.

Despite their best efforts the St. Mary’s U11A were left stranded on 99 – 9 when the allotted 20 overs were up. However, they can be very proud (as I am) of a much improved performance when they really showed their mettle and put into practise those things that we have been working so hard on in training.

Result: St. Mary’s U11A 99 – 9 lost to Cargilfield U11A 130 -8
