1st XI Cricket v Merchiston

Wednesday 26 April

St. Mary’s won by 8 wickets
Our first game of the new season and what a great result! Despite the bracing conditions lingering from yesterday’s snowfall, the boys enjoyed a superb afternoon of sport played in good spirits. Merchiston won the toss and decided to bat first.
Hamish and Lachlan opened the bowling although despite their best efforts, couldn’t break the Merchiston opening partnership. Some tight fielding made the going tricky for the batsmen but it wasn’t until the 8th over that we made the break through. Harris bowled their opener with his first delivery and, supported by Will who was bowling from the other end, piled the pressure on the visitors to maintain their run rate and set us a challenging target. A couple of excellent run outs, one from Otto and one from Will, complimented what was a pleasing fielding performance. Remarkably, not one catch was taken or dropped and overthrows were kept to a minimum! Alex came on and bowled particularly well. What he lacked in pace he made up for in accuracy and after his short, two over spell, had claimed two wickets for only 7 runs. Otto also bowled well and although he didn’t take any wickets, his bowling was economical and helped to keep the run rate down. I was delighted to see all 11 players make valuable contributions in the field. Playing their first games for the 1st XI, Ollie, Muaz, Joseph, Tommy (wicket keeper), Otto, Will and Alex all played well and helped to reduce Merchiston to 114 for 7 after their 20 overs. The pick of our bowlers was Harris with 3 wickets.
In reply, Hamish and Tommy opened the batting and got the team off to a slow but steady start. At just 12 runs from the first 6 overs, I thought it was perhaps too slow but the run rate started to pick up and we edged our way towards our target. Tommy (3) mistimed one and was caught and bowled in the 6th over and three overs later, Hamish did exactly the same but not before scoring a respectable 16. At the loss of his wicket, we were 52 for 2 from 10 overs. Harris and Will then came to the crease and remained there for the rest of the game. They managed to sufficiently increase the run rate with some superb shots and soon the game was within our grasp. Overs 18 and 19 were both tight, so it went down to the final over. Will (11 not out) was on strike and we needed 3 from it to win. Wasting no time, he hit the first ball for 4, guiding his team to an excellent victory.
On paper, an 8 wicket victory does not do the game justice. It was an excellent game, closely fought through to the final over. Very well done to Harris for an impressive 54 not out, but congratulations to the whole team for getting the season off to such a positive start.
Next week we travel to Cargilfield for a 2.15pm start.
