IAPS Cross Country 2017

Sunday 5th March

Thirty St. Mary’s athletes attended the Cross Country event held at John Muir Country Park on Sunday. It was a dry and sunny day for this popular competition, and it was great to have so many parents and other family supporters attend.

The children raced on different surfaces; the start is undulating with little grassy hillocks and patches of ferns, there follows a very sharp turn before the course evens out the race is then run along a coastal path before heading in to the trees; it then loops back to the same path and concludes near the starting line.

The first race was for our U10’s and for many, this was their first proper cross country race out with school. Freyja was well prepared and knew the course having run last year-it came as no surprise when we saw her charging down the finishing straight to take the gold medal-bravo Freyja! Anna B had a very strong race and finished in an impressive 4th place. Kate and Emily were placed 15th and 18th which was in the top third of the pack, Skye and Tiggy ran well too finishing 35th and 36th out of 46. This team were delighted to come in 2nd place. The U10 boys fared brilliantly too-Josh stormed in, in second place with John hot on his shoulder in 3rd. With Tristan in 13th, Nic in 15th, Ollie 22nd and Blair 37th the boys had done enough to win the U10 championships!

The U12’s ran approximately 1.67miles and our girls too performed well. Eliza finished 3rd and looked like she could have run the race again! Libby B claimed the 13th place and also looked fresh-faced coming over the line. Lara and Rosie, encouraging each other along, were placed 22nd and 24th, Mhairi was 35th and Elsa (who has another year in this age group) was 45th out of 53. We were thrilled to hear that this team had been placed 3rd in the U12 competition. The boy’s race was incredibly fast and possibly the most competitive of the day; Caelan was the best placed St. Mary’s runner in 6th, followed by Ed who sprinted in claiming 12th, Geordie was 25th, Oliver 44th and Mitchell 56th out of 66 boys.

Jessica was our sole Under 14 girl runner and she did amazingly well to come 15th out of 45 and she still has a year to go in this age group. The U14 boys ran close together and faced some very strong opposition, Lachlan (Captain) came 13th with Jamie hot on his heels in 15th and Matt snapping at Jamie’s in 17th. Otto topped the next 3 runners in coming 33rd, Fergus 37th and Will 38th from 49 runners-when results were announced this team too had been placed 3rd!

Well done to all the runners who took part in this ever increasing event-each one of you worked so hard and as a team event, places count! Thank you to the parents and staff who supported; your help and general courtesy around the course was noted and appreciated.
