2nd VII Netball v Fettes 222

It was a tough day in the office this afternoon for the 2nd VII as they took on Fettes. Illnesses, injuries and interviews meant we were not at our strongest going into the match and we anticipated Fettes being a strong side to contend with, and they certainly were. It was clear from the first centre pass that the opposition were a slick and highly disciplined team and St. Mary’s struggled to get much of the possession throughout the game. When we did, however, the girls showed some well executed passes and movement. They quickly realised that they needed to dodge their tall markers to be able to receive the ball, rather than try high, loopy passes over their heads, which inevitably were intercepted. The whole team (even those carrying injuries) tried really hard for the entire game and I am proud to say not one of the 8 girls showed any sign of a defeatist attitude. Our goal of the day gave the girls a well deserved boost too. They all continued to play their very hardest right up to the final whistle and in the face of adversity, against a tough team, they did themselves proud by showing the courage and grace to dig in and keep going. That is testament to them as St. Mary’s pupils and so typical of this group of girls - never a whinge or a moan, or a despondent attitude towards a game that’s not going their way. Smiles were on their faces afterwards, perhaps because they knew the better team had won but they had whole-heartedly done their best, or perhaps because it was donuts for match tea!
Next week we are hosting a triangular at home against Loretto and Cargilfield, starting at 2:15pm. All support welcome.
