1st VII Netball v Fettes

Wednesday 22nd February
Played on the lovely indoor courts at Fettes, today’s match was a game of three thirds, all of which Fettes dominated! However, in true St. Mary’s spirit, the girls fought to the bitter end and when they came off court, they certainly looked as though they’d had a work out!
We were slightly late in starting so had to reduce the match to three shorter thirds than usual. We took our time to get up to speed with the game, by which time the Fettes girls had taken the game by the scruff of the neck. However, as the third drew to a close, we started to gain and retain possession well which lifted spirits and gave us a focus going into the beak.
The second third was by far our best. Arguably we were as good as the Fettes girls in the centre of the court, but struggled to prevent two very tall and able Fettes shooters from firing in shots from all angles or get the ball past two very agile and dynamic Fettes defenders. That enabled them to keep a hold on the game but some lovely movement from Louisa, Abbie, Naesi and Lucy, saw Louisa (GA) and Abbie (GS) gain more and more possession. Anna (WD), Chloe (GD) and Georgia (GK) all had a good third too. Rebounds were quickly snapped up and they worked so hard to mark the Fettes and intercept their passes. The colour of their cheeks as they came off after the second period was enough to tell me that these girls were giving their all.
We scored a couple more in the final third, which was nothing less than we deserved but we weren’t close to troubling the Fettes total! Despite coming away second, I was actually delighted with many aspects of today’s game. The sheer determination from my girls was very pleasing to see. Up against a very strong team, the girls never gave up and in phases, played some great netball. More accurate passing and greater spatial awareness need to be a focus before next week’s visit to Ardvreck but I was proud of you all today, girls. Well done.
Mr P.
