U11B Rugby v Merchiston

Wednesday 22nd February

The u11 “B” travelled to Edinburgh on Wednesday for the third meeting of the season with their hosts Merchiston in this 8 a side game. St. Marys took the pass off to start the match on a dry but very windy afternoon which would be a factor to take into consideration.

Both sides got off to a very brisk start as they attempted to play a running passing game despite the wind which was good to see. St. Marys scored first as a good drive involving Jake M and George B ended in a ruck. Then, and after quick ball emerged, 2 good passes into the wind were made and the ball came to Ollie L who immediately took off wide and outstripped the defence from the halfway to score. Soon after Merchiston broke away but a good Mitchell C cover tackle prevented the try.

Merchiston again pushed for the line, but some excellent” go to meet” pressure tackling by George B and Jake M kept the home side at bay. Then Ollie L saved another try with another great cover tackle backed up by Callum A then Ed S during this good home spell. St. Marys then got their hands on the ball more as Archie J out wide had a good run followed by Alex M as play took part more in the home half again. Then the ball got to Ollie L again in some space and with no hesitation sped away dancing past a couple of defenders. 2-0

However from the restart some slack St. Marys tackling crept in and Merchiston took advantage to score their first try. The remainder of the half was even as St. Marys played through their defensive lapse. In fact Ed S came closest to scoring as good handling put him clear but the tackle on the line knocked the ball out of his grasp. Halftime and 2-1

The half started well for St. Marys as they broke out of their half through Mitchell C then Jake M who sprinted clear into the home half but thinking of the team he saw the quicker Ed S outside him so gave him the pass to ensure the try.3-1. Then it was 4-1. This time from a scrum Mitchell C went short side and fed Ollie L who went wide to finish off the move and increase the lead.

Soon after some good passing again into the wind got the ball to Ollie L in space and he duly obliged to run in and score his fourth and make it 5-1. Merchiston didn’t help their cause by dropping the ball when over the line. Then good St Marys defence on their line allowe3d Callum A to break out down the line and step round a defender. From the ruck after being tackled the home side turned ball over and moved ball well to the left to score.5-2. However St Marys struck again. Good handling out wide, with Alex M and Mitchell C involved, and the ball got to Ed S who ran in well to make it 6-2.

With only a few minutes left perhaps St. Marys thought that was it. Because during that time Merchiston scored three times! Now 6-5, they put themselves into a position where they could lose it. However to their credit they picked themselves up and even scored next to now lead by 2. George B had driven well and deep into home territory and offloaded well to Ollie L to score his fifth. Merchiston didn’t give up and scored on time up, but in a final play Jake M broke through and gave to Ed S who ran and finished well for his third. Time up! 8-6

Well done boys for playing a lot of good rugby in trying weather conditions. Never ease off though and play to the final whistle!
