2nd XI Football v Loretto

2nd football v Loretto 8 feb

St. Mary’s dedicated second string footballers made the short scoot over Soutra to play Loretto on Wednesday afternoon.

With a couple of call-ups to the 1st XI squad we were down to eight players. The core of this squad comprised veterans Joseph W, Wilfie B and Liam B backed up by tyros Fergus H, Ollie C, Hamish R, Antony dG and Dicken B.

Loretto fielded a swift and skilful team rippling with talent and very generously gave us three strong players to fill the gaps in the ranks.

The match kicked off and both teams flew into the fray. A wild midfield stramash developed and the ball pinballed around wildly as a mass of boots and bodies forced it around the pitch. The sides were very evenly matched and the defence of Fergus, Hamish, Wilfie and Dicken and keeper Liam, was tested regularly by shots from the home side.

At the other end of the pitch the two pressganged Loretto players were putting pressure on their erstwhile comrades and were unlikely to score on a number of occasions. Ollie, Antony and Joseph were kept very busy in the midfield in both attack and defence (sometimes simultaneously).

The first Loretto goal came somewhat against the run of play as a sustained period of St. Mary’s pressure drew our defence upfield leaving space behind for a long ball to drop into. Liam dived to save but the ball just dribbled over the line.

The match continued in a similar vein with St. Mary’s turning the screw on Loretto without scoring. The Nippers looked dangerous on the counter but were well marshalled by the imposing defenders Wilfie and Dicken who bestrode the visitors’ defence like colossi.

A second Loretto goal came just before the end of this super contest. However, it was not enough to detract from an excellent performance from a spirited bunch of lads who played their socks off from first to last.

Final score: St. Mary’s 2nd XI 0 – 2 Loretto Nippers 2nd XI
