The 1st XI travelled to Loretto on Wednesday for their final match before mid- term. Playing conditions were good that allowed for an open attack minded match.

From the off both teams looked to push forward and try to get that first goal. Possession was equally shared during the opening stages with corners and some shots at goal at both ends though with no clear cut chance on view. Then in 8 minutes, St. Marys were the first to strike. From a Tommy D-B tackle in midfield the ball ended up with Hamish M who dribbled forward and seeing Will S free inside in front of goal slipped it to him and Will S duly dispatched it.

At the midpoint of the half St. Marys broke well out of defence. Matt B cleared well from deep to Hamish M who again slipped it inside this time to Tommy D-B inside the box. This left a 2 on 1 with Harris R against the Loretto keeper but he was taken on rather than using the easier option and the chance was gone. Play continued end to end, but the St. Marys defence prevented Loretto from opening their account with William T, Otto K and Jamie F helping back from midfield all making good tackles.

Then a long up-field kick from defence saw the Loretto goalie come out to clear but the ball broke to Alex F and he prodded it into the empty net. 2-0, which appeared a big lead as the size of the goals were on the small side! Just after this St. Marys forced a corner and the ball came over at the back post to Harris R who first time volleyed it towards the goal but it went just wide. A minute later Otto K threw a quick throw in up the line to Jamie F who put the ball in early to the box to Harris R who volleyed it first time but it hit the goalie and stuck in his stomach without him knowing too much about it. Loretto stlll had chances, but William Mac in goal made a couple of good saves. Thomas M dropped back from mid defence to act as sweeper as extra cover as Loretto pushed forward AND Thomas made a couple of good interventions.

However, with 2 minutes to go of the half, Loretto struck. Too much football was played in midfield and the ball was lost. The defence caught on the back foot stood off and didn’t pick up runners. William Mac was left exposed and it was 2-1. Two minutes later, right on halftime, and it was 2-2 as players stood off and allowed Loretto to play forward and score for the home side a good team goal.

The 2nd half started well for the home side and a shot went over the bar. Then 4 minutes in and the home side went into the lead for the first time. Again in possession a St. Marys player lost the ball. A good early pass forwards caught defenders ball watching and the shot found the net. For the next few minutes Loretto had the best of it as they moved the ball around slickly. Hamish M was in goals now and he had to make some saves. However St. Marys pulled themselves slowly back into it though they were finding it difficult to string enough passes together to create a good scoring opportunity. Then with 2 minutes left a good Jamie F tackle saw him drive up the right and cross in early to Harris R alone up front in the box. He brought it down but as he tried to turn to get in an attempt on goal he was being crowded out but did get in a shot but was blocked.

The final whistle came and ended 2-3. A good comeback by Loretto but a little disappointing for our boys that they couldn’t keep their lead. A big thank you to Loretto for the match, and for their excellent hospitality as we were looked after very well indeed.
