1st XI Football v Mowden Hall
Wednesday 1st February 2017
Football is a funny old game. Wednesday’s match was not very funny but it did show how fickle this fine sport can be.
St. Mary’s put in a fine shift in both attack and defence but were resoundingly thumped by a decent Mowden outfit.
Despite the scoreline the home side always looked to be “in the game” despite the fact that they were several goals in deficit. The St. Mary’s backline of Matt, Lachlan, Thomas, Otto and William T ahead of keeper Will S fed midfielders Captain Muaz, Tommy DB, Alex, Ollie C and Hamish M and with Jamie S and Harris R upfront we had the firepower and wherewithal to move forward with purpose.
Mowden were similarly equipped but, unlike the St. Mary’s boys, every time they moved the ball forward they scored a goal. Every time we got the ball in the box we fluffed the shot or drew a good save from the sharp keeper.
At half-time we were only three goals down but Mowden added to that total after the interval to leave a final scoreline that did not reflect the industry of the home side.
Mowden were fine players and a good side but the huge score differential was no reflection on the difference in skill between the two teams.
They just took the chances that we missed.
Final result: Mowden Hall beat St. Mary’s, Melrose
