U11B Football v Mowden Hall

1st February 2017

The “B’s” welcomed Mowden on Wednesday for this 7 a side match played again in fine weather for the time of year. St. Marys offered Mowden the choice at kick off and they elected to start the match.

In contrast to the previous 2 matches St. Marys started by far the better this week. We had most of the possession and kept it better. From this promising start scoring opportunities soon presented themselves, but finishing them off this week was a different matter! The good lead up play was being wasted as several chances were missed. Archie Mac, Callum A and Archie J were linking well and being instrumental in this good lead up play. Mowden still showed they had a threat, but Ed S in midfield and George B at centre half broke up the visitors attacks effectively.

Then, after 15 minutes, St. Marys opened the scoring. A pass found itself at Archie Mac’s feet and after a short dribble took the shot. The Mowden goalie made another good save, but this time the parry fell to Archie J who had taken up a great position at the far post and he prodded it home. 1-0

For the remainder of the half St. Marys continued to push forward but couldn’t add to their total. Again this was due to some good goalkeeping, and also to a lack of poise in front of goal. However if we continued to create the opportunities then the 2nd half may bring a change of fortune.

The 2nd half saw Alex M come on and the half started with St. Marys again pushing forward. Another strong Archie Mac dribble ended with a pass to Ed S. He in turn took a good touch then shot from the right and it went in at the far post to make it 2-0. Two minutes later a good Callum A dribble ended with him shooting and beating the keeper to make it 3-0. A minute later Mowden should have scored. A good break away saw the ball deep inside the home box, but a great double save from Ollie L prevented the goal. This showed good concentration as he wasn’t overly employed as in previous matches.

Halfway through the half and it was 4-0. Jake M got his reward for his selfless running up front by being in the right place after a shot was saved but he was on hand to tap in. St. Marys really had the bit between the teeth now and pushed hard. A good Ed S run came close, and then Archie Mac drove deep into the Mowden half and shot. When saved the ball broke to Archie J and he finished it off to make it 5-0.

Mowden kept at it and were still keeping the home defence busy, but George B kept his defence well organised with Alex M making some strong clearances to clear danger. Then Archie Mac made a good pass to Callum A who dribbled up the left wing. He crossed in early and well and the ball broke to the again well positioned Archie J who tapped in to make it 6-0 and complete his hatrick! There was time for one final bit of play. Mowden had a corner but Archie Mac picked the ball up on the edge of his box. He then took off and drove the length of the pitch and finished well to score a great solo goal and cap a fine individual game!

Well done to all the boys who kept patient when they were failing initially to score. Also well done to Alex NN who played the entire match for Mowden.
