2nd VII v Mowden Hall
Wednesday 25th January
10 – 13
Another chilly afternoon for playing netball and this week it was against Mowden Hall. The first quarter was dominated by Mowden as the St. Mary’s girls seemed a little slow to get going, despite their lengthy warm up. Mowden managed to get three goals in the first ten minutes whilst we couldn’t quite get the ball through the hoop and at times, even near the D. There was some good defending, however, by our GD and GK who were putting the Mowden shooters under suitable pressure. In the second quarter things picked up for St. Mary’s as movement in the centre third got better from our core players, and whilst Mowden were still very much on the ball, the girls did well to keep possession when they had it. Our shooters managed a 100% shot to goal ratio which boosted the team’s morale. There were still times when possession was literally thrown away and play became rather static; however as a team they were communicating better and not giving Mowden an easy time like they had in the first quarter.
From the second quarter onwards the game evened out on the score board and there was only one or two goals difference between the teams in each ten minute period. Mowden’s marking was much tighter than ours though and if the ball became loose, they were eager to snap it up to turn over possession. In the fourth quarter St. Mary’s were 6-11 down but knew that in netball scores can change very easily so they needed to dig deep. They managed another four goals to Mowden’s two, some of which were taken at quite substantial distance from the goal post but were successfully scored demonstrating that under pressure, our shooters can keep a cool head. Unfortunately, some more sloppy passes and lack of movement caused the ball to be turned over on many occasions and the game ended 10-13 to Mowden who were rightly the better team this afternoon.
Things to work on before next week are moving off the ball, tight marking and making the right decisions under pressure. Every position is vital in netball and so everyone needs to make sure they’re giving 100%. We cannot rest on our laurels after our first two successful matches and today showed that. Thank you to Mowden Hall for coming and being such good sports as always.
Next week we play Belhaven Hill at home at the slightly earlier time of 2:15pm.
