U11B Football v Riley House

18th January 2017

St Marys u11 “B’s” entertained Riley House on Wednesday afternoon in a 7 a side match.

Winning the toss St Marys decided to take kick off. Immediately St Marys were under pressure as shots and crosses came in. It was proving a struggle to get out of their half and when they did play just came straight back at them. However despite this St Marys managed to keep their goal intact. This was due in the main to Ollie L in goal who had some great saves, and to the back 3 of Archie J, Callum A and George B at centre half who all got in tackles and blocks to keep Riley out.

Also during this spell, Ed S and Mitchell C in midfield worked well to support their back 3 with stout tackling and when in possession trying to hold onto the ball as long as they could. Jake M up front as the lone striker contributed well by continually running good lines to try to provide an outlet for his teammates and relieve pressure. All in all, the boys did their level best to ride the storm in this initial 10 minutes.

It was at this moment St. Marys had their first threat on the Riley goal. Some good lead up play by Callum A and Jake M saw the ball arrive at Mitchell C ‘s feet and he just fired off the shot. When the ball rippled the netting in the far corner St. Marys were 1-0 up.

Ollie L then made 2 or 3 more good saves, and George B got in more vital tackles in the heart of the defence to deny Riley. In between this St. Marys though came close to adding to their total. !5 minutes in and indeed the home team did add a second! Again good lead up play through Ed S and Callum A set up the shot for Mitchell C. This time h was  denied by the post, but Jake M as all good strikers do had followed up and was rewarded with a tap in. 2-0

A stunned looking Riley tried to lift their intensity. Shots came in on the home goal and this time 2 in two minutes found the back of the net and scores were level again. However, to their credit St. Marys broke well up the pitch with again Callum A (who demonstrated great ball control at his feet and tackled strongly all match) combining well with Archie J this time. The ball broke to that man Mitchell C again and his shot though well struck slipped under the Riley keeper to make it 3-2.

With the last kick of the half, Riley shot and it crept in at the far post to prevent St Marys going in at halftime with a lead.

Alex M came on for the 2nd half and immediately was in the action as he got his foot in to break up a couple of Riley attacks. Riley were intent on adding to their total and they had St. Marys initially under the cosh. Ollie L had a spell out of goal after his great exploits with Ed S taking the gloves. Even though Riley had most of the territory and possession, St. Marys kept their shape well and attempted with some success to play football out of defence and counter.

Halfway through the 2nd half and it was still all square. However, Riley just as they were becoming frustrated hit the home team with 2 quick goals. One unfortunately came from a pass back from midfield which went to the feet of the visiting striker. Alex N-N came on in defence now and got in a good block.

Then Riley really found their shooting boots and 2 more quick goals followed with 2 minutes to go. A final OG in the last minute saw Riley win by 3-8

Well done to both teams who tried to play all out attacking football. Also credit is due to the St Marys boys who fought hard throughout and gave a good account of themselves.
