2nd VII Netball v Loretto

Wednesday 11th January 2017
Final score: 10 – 2
2nd Netball v Loretto 11 Jan 1

What a bracing afternoon it was yesterday for the first match of the season for the senior girls. Having only had two training sessions there was lots of room for moving positions around during the game to get an initial sense of how these girls are going to work best over the course of this season.

It was a very positive start to the season and the girls worked hard to keep possession of the ball for a large proportion of the 1st and 2nd quarters. There was a slight tendency to lob the ball about the court rather than make purposeful passes and many pairs of overly excited feet caused the whistle to be blown. Yet, by half time, the shooters were getting their eye in nicely giving us a 8 – 0 lead and the movement around the court by the girls was much improved.

The third quarter was not our strongest of the match but with the freezing temperatures, all the girls did so well to keep darting about in order to stay warm but some miss caught balls were a result of hands not being taken out of sleeves quick enough! Loretto started to make strides and got their two goals during this quarter, whilst we also managed another two. Our marking needed to be a little tighter and in the girls desire to keep on the move, the obstruction levels upped a little bit too. That said, after a short final quarter it was evident the girls had all made a valiant effort at playing in such windy and cold conditions.

Whilst there is plenty to work on, a great result for the St. Mary’s girls to begin the season and the nicest of teams to have hosted on such a blustery afternoon.

Well done.
