1st Netball v Loretto

Wednesday 11th January

St. Mary’s 20, Loretto 3

1st Netball 11 Jan 17

I’m not sure we could have chosen a colder day to get the new season up and running but at least it wasn’t snowing! However, the biting wind did its best to blow us off court and freeze the finger tips but we battled on and had a good afternoon’s sport.

We started by playing 10 minute quarters but as the conditions worsened, quarters 3 and 4 were shortened. The girls got off to a flying start. Passes were accurate, our movement off the ball was very encouraging, as was our marking and Millie (GA) and Louisa (GS) both shot very well indeed. Subsequently by the end of the first period, we had a comfortable lead.

I made a couple of changes in the second quarter but again we dominated proceedings. Lucy (C), Naesi (WA) and Anna (WD) linked superbly with one another and supplied some excellent ball into the shooters. Georgia (GK) and Chloe (GD) were worked harder in this quarter and protected their post well. The Loretto shooters were afforded a single shot and pleasingly, blocked off from further attempts. Abbie came on and played in a variety of positions, including GS and scored a couple of goals before rotating to allow someone else the opportunity.

Quarters 3 and 4 were shortened and positions were changed again. I was pleased to see the girl’s concept and knowledge of playing various positions was strong. Set moves still worked and the shooters still found their range. By the time the game finished, we were all ready for tea and a warm up.

Well done to Naesi and her team for an excellent start to the season. We welcome Cargilfield next week, for a 2.30pm start.
