U11A Rugby v  Craigclowan

30th November 2016

U11 Rugby v Craig 301116

The u11’s travelled to Perth on Wednesday for this match on a sunny and mild end of autumn afternoon. St Marys won the toss and elected to take the pass off.

The first couple of minutes saw us enjoy good possession, and though we didn’t break through we put the home defence under some pressure. Then Craigclowan  had a spell of possession and made better inroads into our defence. They took play up to our line and forced a scrum 5. A penalty then followed and from that after a few phases they managed to turn it into the first try of the match.

Play from both sides became a little scrappy with passes being dropped or badly directed which affected momentum. However within this there was still good play with Thomas E again defending stoutly, Caelan B having some good arcing runs and Mac R making ground with strong driving.  Indeed with one of those runs he was held up over the line but couldn’t ground the ball. Then at the mid- point of the half,  Craigclowan forced play up into the St. Marys 22. From a scrum 5 the strand off ran at our defence and scored aided by some weak tackles. 0-2

Again after the restart we found ourselves under pressure in our 22, but turn over ball from the ruck got out to Cealan B who did really well to take play up to the halfway. Again though Craigclowan forced play into our 22, but a good turnover ball by Archie M at a ruck allowed us to clear our lines. Plenty effort was going in, but all too often our basic skills let us down especially with our passing. However good tackling from Geordie Mac, George B and Archie Mac amongst others helped keep the try count to 2 down at half time.

We started the second half as we left the first. Our lack of cohesion and continuity was affecting our ability to put Craigclowan under any sort of real pressure. The home side at times though were affected the same way. Both defences were on top but there were still good moments ball in hand. Jake M and Stewart M kept looking to test the home defence up front, and Thomas E always looked to take ball forward with determination. Finlay B worked to be on hand for others when support was needed. Callum A, on at halftime, kept a good wide position on the wing but not enough passes were getting out to him.

However it was the home team who scored next. A dropped St. Marys pass gave Craigclowan a scrum, and from that the stand off again stepped of his right foot and went in almost unopposed.0-3. A few minutes later it was 0-4 as again some slack tackling let in the home side.

Then Archie Mac made a great break from the halfway and took platy up to the home 22. Mac R up in support picked up and drove left and broke through some tackles to score. 1-4. Any chance of a comeback was immediately snuffed out as Craigclowan drove up to the 22 and from the ruck moved ball out left to score in the corner. 1-5. Soon after it was 1-6 as again some poor handling ended up with a penalty against us. From that,  direct running broke our defence and one pass brought the try. However Mac R, from just inside his half, took the ball on the hoof and broke a couple of tackles. He made the 22 and swerved  to avoid defenders and got to the line. But to make sure of the try passed to the supporting Archie M who touched down. 2-6

No more tries were added in the final 2 minutes. The boys agreed it wasn’t our best day of rugby, but contained inside it were still a lot of good things. We were well looked after by our hosts and thank them very much for that.
