1st VIII Hockey v Mowden Hall

Wednesday 30th November

1st VIII Hockey 30 Nov 16

St. Mary’s 5, Mowden Hall 1

Today’s game was our last home game of the term and what a game it was! Mowden were a strong side, some very tall and powerful girls, however, we played some of the best hockey of the season and came away with a comfortable win.

For the first time in a while, conditions were favorable. Neither too cold, windy, frozen, flooded or any other element that seems to have been thrown at us this season. The girls got off to a cracking start. Within the first few minutes we had worked the ball up the right hand side and Naesi found herself on the end of a loose ball and slotted home the first goal of the afternoon. The second goal took some getting and we had to wait a while for it. Mowden seemed to gather themselves defensively and despite a pretty constant threat, kept us out. The second goal also came in the first half, this time Lucy got on the end of a cross and from the top of the D, swept home her first goal of the game. Again, the Mowden girls rallied and not only defended admirably, but also posed quite a threat at the other end. Chloe and Eloise playing in our defence had supported their midfield well throughout the half but had to be on their toes to see off the few Mowden attacks that came their way. Jess too. She made a couple of good saves and helped to see us through to half time, two goals to the good.

The start of the second half saw the Mowden girls get the bit between their teeth. Had it not been for some heroics at the back, they may well have edged their way back into the game. As it was, we continued to pose a considerable threat and indeed scored a couple of classic run away goals. The fourth goal came courtesy of a short corner, well practised and superbly executed. Lucy got her name against goals 2, 3 & 4 and Jessica scored our 5th. Mowden did score one of their own and deserved it. Their pressure on our defence was difficult to cope with. However, with a forward line and a midfield that played so well and created so many scoring opportunities, conceding one is allowed! So overall, this was a fantastic afternoon and I was thrilled with the hockey on display. Very well done to all.

Next week we travel to Riley House for the final game of the term, start time, 2.30pm.

Player profiles

Jessica: some great skills and wow, you’re one tenacious player! A constant thorn in the Mowden side today. Remember strength and composure on the ball.

Lucy: you’re playing the best hockey I've seen you play all season at the minute. Such confidence on the ball too. A devilish shot from unimaginable angles. A great asset to your game.

Abbie: what a surge in confidence recently. You’re showing much better strength, composure and skills and your support play from the middle of the pitch is excellent. Impressive!

Anna: the progress you have made this season is inspiring. Few work as hard on the pitch and few deserve their chance in the 1sts as much as you. Fabulous!

Millie: another great game today. Your pace and runs down your wing were instrumental today and you supported the front and back lines superbly. Very well done.

Naesi: some great runs and great stick work. You too use your pace well and coupled with your work rate, makes you a formidable opponent. Lift your head to find your target.

Eloise: another great game today. Your stick work has come on so much and it’s great to see you developing the confidence to use so effectively in all areas of the pitch. Offload a little quicker at times.

Chloe: I haven’t seen you come onto the ball so effectively as today. The Mowden attack had little answer to your strength and ability to cover the ground so quickly. Great support play too.

Jess: not as busy today but what came your way you handled well. Good awareness of players and your communication was very effective. Watch that near post!
