1st VIII Hockey v Earlston High
Wednesday 16th November
St. Mary’s 7, Earlston 2
Well, today was the first finger-freezer of the season; wow, was it cold! Not helped by the fact that the heavens opened as the game started and coupled with a biting northerly wind, it made for some pretty unpleasant conditions.
The game itself was slightly unbalanced in the first half. The girls competed for every ball and subsequently we won the lion’s share of possession. We also showed great composure on the ball and put the Earlston defense under constant pressure. Some great hockey was on display and I was thrilled to see the girl’s passing and movement off the ball, be so effective. We were able to work the ball around the Earlston defense as opposed to pass it through them and by half time we had scored a few with no reply from Earlston.
In the second half one or two of the Earlston girls got the bit between their teeth and made impressive runs, two of which culminated in goals, which gave the Earlston girls a reward for their efforts. However, we continued to ply the pressure and managed to score a few more which saw us through to a deserved win.
Following the game, cold fingers and toes brought the afternoon to a slightly premature end, so we returned to school, got some hot juice from chef and went out to support the 1st XV in their match against Belhaven. Perhaps it was our vocal support that spurred the boys on to a very well deserved victory!?
Next week the Dandylions play the Wosps at Loretto, 2pm start, the 1sts/2nds play Cargilfield at Tweedbank, as do the 2nds, both of which start at 3.15pm.
