Venue: St Mary’s
Date: 16th November 2016
The return fixture brought a cold day with a muddy pitch. Both teams were champing at the bit after the first fixture went to Belhaven across in Dunbar.
Belhaven kicked off towards the pavilion end and St Mary’s roared into action. St Mary’s kept hold of the ball for a good number of phases and gradually worked their way up the field. Some great clearing out at every contact situation allowed Jamie F to score St Mary’s first try. His intelligent play enabled the conversion to be made in front of the posts to put St Mary’s 7-0 up.
Belhaven had a few flurries of attack in the St Mary’s half but a never say die attitude from the whole team did not let them through to score. Alex F made a try saving dot down over his own line at one point after a kick through to save a certain try.
The backs began to work their flair with centre’s Lachlan and Will showing their pace and power. Lachlan had a trademark run down the school touchline but some great defence from Belhaven allowed them to clear their lines when Lachlan was brought down short. Harris and William T were pulling the strings with some smart play and Hamish M was all over the park - he had an outstanding day. Muaz was showing his magic feet with goosesteps to go around defenders – great to watch!
Lachlan did, however, score next with another strong run and had the intelligence to go under the posts for another converted try by Hamish.
Half time came and went and the message was clear – 0-0 and we start again.
Hamish M was causing carnage all over the park and ably helped out my superb clearing from the rest of the pack. Thomas’ and Joseph’s fringe defence and work rate was excellent. Jamie and Wilfie were carrying hard all day. It was a pleasure to watch. Hamish M got the next try from close range after a good clear out from William M and Liam B who were playing very well indeed!
Belhaven did not look like scoring due to our defence being rock solid all day and it was from our defence that a penalty was awarded and eventually Will S got our final try through sheer power and good technique to get over the line.
A superb effort to all involved and shows what can happen if every single player does their job and does it well. We move onto next week with confidence but knowing that we take many learning points from this fixture too.
Always learning, next job lads!
