U11 Rugby - Cargilfied Sevens

Sunday 6th November 2016

The U11’s travelled to Edinburgh on Sunday to take part in this inaugural event. It didn’t  look a promising day weather wise  as the rain poured  alongside the cold wind as we stood in the school car park at 8:30 a.m. However when we crossed the other side of Soutra the sun shone and remained until tournament end.

First 2 matches were against Merchiston and Currie R.F.C. We played good rugby with our running, supporting and offloading game but we couldn’t quite match them for pace as each possessed 2 or 3 flyers. As far as territory and possession went we were a match for both, but their ability to strike from anywhere on the pitch proved decisive. Two losses were the result.

Our 3rd and final group match was against Cargilfield Reds. A similar team to us as far as pace was concerned it proved to be our best match so far. Because we lost 1-2 the boys were disappointed as we knew perhaps we could have had a more favourable result. However they played well but didn’t quite take all the scoring opportunities they did well to create.

The knockout stages now followed and we were to play Cargilfield Blues in the plate semi-final. Again the boys worked hard and gave a good account of themselves as they scored  a couple of good tries in going down 2-4.

Final match of the day saw us play Loretto. Unfortunately the first half was by far our worst period of the tournament. There is no other way to put it except to say a few of us just didn’t play. 1-4 down on the stroke of halftime, a last play try pulled one back for us. However, we rallied each other at the break and the 2nd half was our best of the tournament as we scored 4 tries without reply. A good way to finish and the boys deserve credit for picking themselves up.

Well done to all the 8 players who came on the day and represented the school well. These players were;

Thomas E   Caelan B    Geordie Mac     Ollie L     Mac R    Archie M     George B       Stewart M

Mr A Rutherford
