1st XV v Longridge Towers

Wednesday, 2nd November 2016
22-22

It was a great day for rugby and the pitch was in good condition thanks to Mr. Bell. Five of our senior players were off playing Dandy’s v Wosps so some of us had to play harder than we have before as we didn’t have as many experienced players.

The game began with us receiving the first kick, it landed right on the wing but a strong charge let a Longridge player win it back and he ran quickly and scored. Soon though St. Mary’s came back with a great kick by William. We then won the ball back from a ruck and passed it wide. After a few attempts, an overlap appeared and Matt received the pass and scored. What looked like a good conversion kick by Will unfortunately missed. Another try was scored by Jamie but it could have come quicker; most people were just running to contact and we weren’t getting anywhere, if we’d passed the ball wide there would’ve been a much quicker (and better) try. However, Jamie had a strong pick and go and thus a good score.

Again, Longridge kicked to Tweedie, who had a good run, as did Muaz. When we passed the ball out from a tight ruck it went to Will who ran nearly the whole pitch but was sadly tackled on the 22. Jamie then picked it up and followed through with the try. By now it was two  minutes to half- time with a score of 15:5.

The second half started off well. William kicked to Longridge and we won back the ball. After losing the ball into touch at the try line we regained it and Muaz had a great run with a few steps to get past the opposition and then scored. Will scored the conversion with a good kick. Longridge kicked back to us but the forwards weren’t getting to the rucks and finally, they passed out to their wing who ran past us and scored. Our forwards weren’t getting to rucks, which we were losing and we weren’t passing wide. We spent a while in our 22, a few kicks but Longridge regained the ground. Line-outs and scrums all got us nowhere and finally their wing scored again. They still hadn’t got any conversions but the pack wasn’t working and we spent a while back in our 22 again. TCUP was crucial but we kept losing the ball, at the last gasp a good interception got past us right on the line and a try was scored. It was now 20-22 to us and it was nail-biting behind the posts but irritatingly, they got the kick and the game ended a draw.

We need to work on work rate and thinking clearly. Also passing out wide was a weakness for us. We were a stronger team but the second half saw Longridge want it more, heads up boys, next job work hard. Good game though without some key players but let’s prepare for a win next time.
