U11 Hockey v Craigclowan

Wednesday 26th October
St.Mary’s-2: Craigclowan-1

U11 v Craigclowan 261016

Captain: Rosie

The Under 11 team were delighted to welcome Craigclowan to Tweedbank on our return from half-term.

The game began at a fast pace and it was clear to all that this was going to be an end to end tussle. Craigclowan’s defence stood strong despite Mhairi and Hannah C doing their best to work their way around them. Time and again Maria worked back in conjunction with Eliza, Lucy and Hannah F to feed balls to our attack, the tenacity of the girls improved as the game progressed and it was certainly not a lack of effort on our part which stopped the ball getting through.

We were only really threatened on one occasion and my heart sank as the runaway ball was picked up by Craigclowan’s strongest player-Anna was now placed in a one-on –one situation, unfazed she charged out ,kicked the ball then stopped the re-bound with the edge of her stick! The half-time whistle blew and it was 0-0.

A more robust St. Mary’s team emerged after a quick team talk; it was time to show some hunger and commitment to want to win. It was only one minute in that our first goal was scored courtesy of Maria and Mhairi. We held on to the lead with another goal belting off the backboard in minute 5; this time it had begun with Molly S and Rosie working brilliantly to stave off a defensive move, they passed to Hannah F who sent it down the line to Eliza, this pass was received by Hannah C sent to the post and popped in by Mhairi-a real team effort.

Craigclowan themselves got the bit between the teeth after our second goal; they ran from the centre and a strike right from the edge of the D was deemed to be legitimate.

With only one minute to go and all legs tiring we were mighty pleased to hear the full time whistle.  A super game, a true team effort played in great spirit.
