1st XV Rugby v Riley House
26th October 2016
St Mary’s were straight back into action after their half term break. They were raring to go and with a slightly different starting line-up, the boys were, as always, looking forward to it.
St Mary’s kicked off towards the Greenyards and very quickly got possession back after Riley house built a number of phases. Some beautiful passing from one side of the pitch to the other was fantastic to see and some razzle dazzle was on show from the whole side. Due to some holiday blues, St Mary’s were making a number of basic errors that would have led to a try but the team thought: ‘next job’ and ‘TCUP’ and eventually the Riley house defence broke down with Will S scoring a cracker down the left flank. Scorching pace and great vision from Harris and Muaz Put Will in space. Tommy converted this try. Will got another very shortly afterwards as St Mary’s built some very positive phases. Thomas M was back to his barnstorming best ably supported by Joseph and William in the front row. Time and again the gain line was being broken and William T at half back was zipping the ball to Harris very efficiently. Will S was showing how effective he was in space after he was given time on the ball from Tommy and Harris at 10 and 12.
All players were playing well and the vision shown by everyone was excellent to see. The passing skills from 1 to 13 was outstanding and led to a Thomas M try under the sticks which was converted.
Riley house then replied with a very good try of their own but Lachlan responded soon after when he had a trademark run through the midfield to dot down.
After a positive half time drink and chat, the boys got back to it with a refreshed mind-set. 0-0 was the score.
The ball was spun from touchline to touchline and eventually found its way to Fergus H on the wing who scored a terrific try and his first try for the senior team. A great team try and a pleasure to watch. Tommy converted. Muaz at full back was beginning to show his flair and footwork. Goosesteps down the wing and magic feet gained ground every time he got the ball. Another break from Lachlan and a sharp gamble line from Muaz gave Muaz his first try of the afternoon under the posts which was also converted.
Riley responded really well and scored two very good tries through strong running and good footwork to move the ball to space effectively.
The game was getting more entertaining as the time went on. Will S got his hatrick through some great running from Hamish M and William T down the touchline. Jamie F, as ever, was industrious at the breakdown and his work rate was phenomenal to secure the ball to keep the phases going.
To finish the match off in style, Antony dG got his first try for the 1sts after running in another beauty of a team try with great passing and vison from all players to get the ball to Antony in space.
A great game of rugby and a real positive boost after the holidays and moving onto Longridge next week.
Well done boys – a pleasure to watch. Next job.
