U11A Rugby v Loretto
Wednesday 28th September 2016
On Wednesday the u11’s travelled to Loretto on a fine autumn afternoon. The pitch was firm and made for a good running and handling match. Play was even for the first few minutes with no team dominating, and play took place around the halfway. Then St. MARYS took play into the home 22 and from the resulting
ruck the ball was moved out to Thomas E who ran strongly to the line to score. 1-0.
Loretto then had a good spell. Keeping possession well through several phases, they then moved the ball out to the centre who ran well to score albeit aided by a couple of poor attempted tackles. 1-1.
However from the restart, Mac R took the ball at pace and dummied to break through the Loretto defence line and then passed out to the supporting Archie M. When stopped he return passed back to Mac R on the hoof and drove in from 10 metres out to restore the St. Marys lead. 2-1.
St. Marys were enjoying good possession and territory with Jake M, George B and Archie Mac all having good runs. Callum A at scrum half was being a good link between backs and forwards at the base of the ruck, and provided support to others going forward.
St. Marys then picked up a loose ball and it was passed out to Frederick K who ran to the line from the 22. Although tackled, he made the line keeping control of the ball well to make the score 3-1.
With 2 minutes of the half remaining, Loretto picked up their game. Again some loose St. Marys tackling on a driving forward let him in to score and make it 3-2. Buoyed by this, Loretto pushed again in the last play of the half, but St. Marys held and the score remained 3-2.
St. Marys started the 2nd half well. They had all the early pressure but couldn’t score, partly by Loretto tackling well but also through St. Marys not using their own men enough who were free in space. Unfortunately St Marys would regret this later on. Loretto then came back into things with play now more even and the match increased yet again in intensity. Nobody really had the upper hand but Loretto were the first to get into the other team’s 22. St. Marys tackled well here though to keep their line intact. Thomas E, Mac R, Jake M and Archie Mac were putting in a load of tackles. Then it was a scrum 5 to Loretto, but they were kept out.
Then with 3 minutes to go, St. Marys got up to the 22. From the ruck on the left the ball went out to the right wing where Archie Mac was tackled. St. Marys recycled the ball again and play went back to the left and now out to Frederick K in some space and he squeezed in at the corner to make it 4-2.
With time running out Loretto launched forward with a combination of using their strong ball carriers and moving it out wide to their speedy runners. St. Marys though held firm, but a penalty conceded 5 metres out from their line gave the home team the opportunity to drive once more and this time they succeeded in making the line.4-3.
From the restart St. Marys kept the ball well until eventually they knocked on. From the scrum Loretto took play up into the visitors 22 where ball was turned over but then knocked on so scrum to Loretto. From this St. Marys infringed at the ruck and it was penalty to Loretto. They used their tried and tested way to score again by driving forward after 2 passes out. 4-4 and time up.
A good effort from both teams as they looked to run with the ball at every opportunity which made for an entertaining match to watch. Again thank you to our hosts who made us very welcome and looked after us very well.
