U11 Hockey Loretto 7s

Final v Cundall Manor 1-2 loss
A super day of hockey for the Under 11 girls-a feisty and determined bunch they have the added bonus of being pretty skilful too! The day began at 10am with the first of our five fifteen minute matches; we played Loretto and showed early on that we meant business. The girls showed structure and moved well when off the ball-they fully deserved their 4-0 victory.

After watching the Under 13s and discussing their tactics, we took to the pitch against Belhaven. Strong passes and clever use of space ensured another 3 goals were scored with none against us.

A welcome ice-cream from the Luca’s van gave the girls the energy to face a courageous Ardvreck side. We were definitely more skilful but they nearly marked us out of the game; a last minute strike saw us run out deserved winners of this tussle.

After lunch we ventured back to the ‘smurf-turf’ determined to put on a good show against the touring Cundall Manor team. A fantastic game of fast paced attractive looking hockey-it was exciting to see such a high standard from Under 11s and it was heartening to hear compliments from the crowd. We scored first and I thought we had the game in the bag until Cundall scored a breakaway goal on the final whistle.

When the scores had been added together St. Mary’s had topped the leader board with 3 wins and a draw; Cundall Manor had the same results but as we had more goals ‘for’ we claimed first place. Cundall Manor were placed 2nd with the same points as us but with fewer goals. So, the final was to be another match against the Yorkshire girls; they started strongly and before we knew it they were 2 goals ahead of us. Gritty as ever the St Mary’s girls fought back and to the delight of the crowd a cracker of a goal soon had us just one goal behind. Despite their best efforts the girls in green ran out of steam and the cup winners 2016 were Cundall Manor.

I could not have been more proud of the U11 team today-they worked so hard both individually and for one another, a credit to their school it was a joy to spend a whole day observing  them play hockey and have fun.
